It would appear to me that the name change was more like a public records goof-up where they spell a name the way it's being pronounced. In Georgia they always pronounce Keown (cowan) so no doubt that's what happened to your name. Could have been on arrival in America. They say the way so many names were spelled wrong and even changed when they arrived was a mess. Can you imagine what they did with some of the Polish names !
