My mother gave me a letter - written to Dear Daughter - it says Edwardsville ILL, Feb 28th, 1864 - it appears to be written by Larkin C. Keown. In the letter he ask her to write her "Grand Father"-about-"your Uncle James bounty and back pay." He writes on to say... "he might do that much for you especially since he never did any thing for your Dear Mother or for your Uncle James after either of them were old enough to do anything for themselves, and he never hurt himself doing anything for them before that time"... "If you had to get help from him he would do no better"..."I would think better of his intellect if he had showed as great a disposition to do something for his Unhealthy son while he was able, as he does now to get the benefit of his sacrafice in the fields of Battle"..."If your grandfather does not consent to let you have the benefit, I hope he may not succeed in getting any thing from the War Department"... "We are all well except for little Joe, he has been quite sick"..."Your affectionate father" I hope to find out who this is - and I can't figure out why my mother had this letter. My mother, who passed away in 1996 gave me this letter along with the Civil War discharge papers pertaining to James Y. Topping of Centralia, IL,...James Y Topping is my great Aunts grandfather - her name was Ellen Topping. Possibly this letter is somehow connected with my great Aunt Ellen Topping - or her grandfather James Y. Topping ( her father was Charles Topping ) Can you give me any tips to who this Larkin C. Keown is - who his daughter is – who is uncle James - who the daughter’s grandfather is? Peter Curran peterscurran@yahoo.com
