Hi Theresa,

I think that your Delia is also my Delia. I wonder, though, if you would tell me why you think that her first husband was a Keogh. I think that Delia's *maiden* name was Keogh, brother of John L. Keogh, my gt-grandfather. A cousin of my mother told me, about 40 years ago, that John had one brother, Daniel Keogh and two sisters, Delia Keogh Hurley and Mary Keogh McHugh (not certain of that spelling). I have a letter, written by John in 1908, that he moved from Ireland to London in 1851 and married Alicia O'Fallon. They were, in fact, first cousins, as well. Subsequent research revealed that Delia married Robert A. Hurley in the late 1850s. I found Delia living in Hoxton, Shoreditch, London in the 1861 census, living with her aunt, Catherine Fitzgerald. Her husband isn't listed, but a one year old Robert John Hurley is. I suspect that Robert A., her husband, simply wasn't present. What's telling is that her birthplace, here, is listed as "Keoghvill, Co. Roscommon". Keoghville was the ancestral home of my John L. Keogh. John was born in 1834, Delia around 1838 to 1842 (I suspect the earlier date is probably closer to the truth).

I next found her,(aged 39)in the 1881 census, living with her husband, Robert (43) and children Delia (17), Robert (16), and Elizabeth (14). I suspect that the 1861 Robert child died and a later child was named Robert. Mary is not mentioned. Delia is listed as being born in Dublin and Robert Senior as born in Islington, London. I think it's possible that she was in fact born in Dublin, but mentioned Keoghville in her earlier census return because that was her old home. Census records are never terribly dependable.

Then in 1891, A Robert A. Hurley is shown, born in Islington, London and "Dealia", born in Ireland. No children are listed, presumably all adults and living elsewhere.

John L. Keogh was a police constable for the Metropolitan police and in the late 1860s emigrated to the States, settling in Old Forge, PA (a small town outside of Scranton). Have you ever heard anything about American cousins?

Since you mention the marriage date of 1858, I suspect that you have Robert and Delia's mar. certificate. Her father's name should have been listed on that certificate as "Ross Keogh, Gentleman".

I'm most eager to hear from you about all this.

Warm regards,

George Duffy
