Apparently there was close connections between the Riddells and Garvies of Nairobi. I would be interested in exploring the relationship between the two families. They were both of Scottish origin. Donald was also a Freemason and the family very involved in theatre.

To my knowledge James and Dorothy (Dolly) never had children. Nor do I know the dates they left Kenya.

Dorothy's mother Cornelia Garvie (nee Steyn) died at the age of 94 years. She is buried in the cemetry in Deal, Kent, England where she had been living with her daughter Dorothy. Evidently the family had moved there. It would be interesting to obtain an inscription from the grave in Deal. Is it possible that was where Margaret Wilson was from?

They subsequently moved to Perth, Australia.

Colin Garvie
