Hello Barbara and of course my good "rafiki" Bob. In Mary Gillett's index of the many Pioneers of East Africa (which is as scarce as hen's teeth), the following entry appears under James Riddell.
"(1914 [ie when he came out]) Born in Glasgow, a Master Baker, he worked first with Messrs Wimhurst Ltd., and later with MacKinnon Bros., Nairobi. He was Mayor of Nairobi on more than one occasion, and was President of the Caledonian Society, Nairobi, in 1928. Keenly interested in football and a great supporter of the Caledonians, his recreation was painting and he was an artist of some note. He had a married daughter living up-country and a son who, for many years, worked with the KUR&H." [that is the Kenya and Uganda Railways & Harbours] Further comments by yours truly: There were many people of Scottish origin that came out to Kenya. Also many Kenyans were also fine artists.
