* When in 1776 George Washington had reorganized the Continental Army, it had included the rank of ensign. An ensign was the junior officer of a company or regiment and traditionally carried the flag. The US Army abolished the term of ensign in 1800 and replaced it with the equivalent modern rank of Second Lieutenant. As learned from The Continental Army by Robert K. Wright, Jr., 1983, email conversation in October, 2009, with Dr. Gary Trogdan at the US Army Center of Military History as well as additional various resources. -- Michelle M. Roy
