The following descendant chart was taken from “My Ninety-Five Milestones” by Margaret Fletcher Kent Paine, 1932. Book is available for viewing at both Ancestry.com and HeritageQuestonline.com [Note from Michelle M. Roy] I believe this is the Helmer KENT born to Helmer KENT and Sarah COOK based on the following sources: 1. Helmer KENT, Jr. born to Helmer KENT and Sarah COOK on February 19, 1786 (d. July 18, 1858) in Pequannock, NJ. Exact birth and death dates taken from LDS individual records at www.familysearch.org, family information from "History of South Hero Island, Vermont – Volume II", compiled by Allen L. Stratton. Material was printed in 1980 and is located at the New England Historical Society in Boston, MA, 617.536.5740, www.newenglandancestors.org. 2. "Hellemach Annatje [KIND], to Hellemach KIND and Sara COOK. [No witness listed]" On page 216 under “Records of the Reformed Dutch Church at Persepeney now Montville, N.J., organized on February 15th, 1774” in Reformed Dutch Church Records of Pompton Plains. Book was found on www.Ancestry.com. DESCENDANTS OF HELMER KENT “Father’s name was Helmer KENT. He was taller than your Uncle William, his hair was light and his eyes were blue. He was an ambitious man, full of energy, a blacksmith by trade. He had very little education although his stepfather was a school teacher. I suppose that he went to school when he was a small boy and I have heard him say that he went part of two terms after that. But he kept his accounts and, though they might not have been kept after the manner of the accountants of today, I never heard of errors.” “Father’s people came from Holland but it is supposed that his ancestors had gone there from England during the religious persecutions as Kent is an English name. His [Helmer A. KENT’s] mother spoke English with difficulty for she had been used to the Dutch language.” Helmer KENT [1786-1858] 1st. married Hannah ALLEN [1795-1816] 1. [KENT] There is also this extra information: “John [KENT], 7 whose descendants write me he was of the family of Cephas KENT, is evidently the same John who records a deed dated Dec. 25, 1799, of 100 acres of land in lot 42 of Plattsburgh, NY., Ol Patent, lying abt. 4 miles west of the present Plattsburgh, in what was then a dense wilderness. Jacob KENT and Peter KENT lived further up in the woods, and about the same time Helmer KENT, a blacksmith, lived in the village. He later became a Methodist exhorter and moved with his brother Abner KENT to Ellenburgh, Clinton Co., NY. On Page 206 of Kent Family Genealogies of the United States and Their Possible English Ancestry by L. Vernon Briggs. Book can be viewed on www.books.google.com. “Jacob [KENT], son of Co. Jacob, mar. Martha NOYES, and d. Feb. 23, 1852, at Newbury, Vt.; probably the same who was Judge of Probate, Orange C., Vt., 1786 to '91, and Sheriff 1842-3. One Jacob KENT was living in Rowley, Mass., in 1886. There were taxed in the City of Boston, the year 1822, Henry S. KENT, Jacob H. KENT, Martin KENT, John KENT, Moses KENT. One Jacob KENT of Newbury became shareholder in the Amesbury Cotton Factory in 1814. Jacob KENT, Dustin Z. KENT, and Helmer B. KENT resided Grand Isle, Vermont.“ On Page 186 of Kent Family Genealogies of the United States and Their Possible English Ancestry by L. Vernon Briggs. Book can be viewed on www.books.google.com. ***1779*** "Sara [KINT] born/baptized to Helmigh KIENT and Sara KINT. [No witness listed]" On page 65 in Reformed Dutch Church Records of Pompton Plains. Book was found on www.Ancestry.com. ***1781*** "Maria [KINT], bo. Feb. 20, bp. Apr. 16 to Helmigh KINT and Sara COOK. [No witness listed]" On page 70 in Reformed Dutch Church Records of Pompton Plains. Book was found on www.Ancestry.com. ***1795*** "The surviving family of Helmer KENT, Sr. is still at Pequanack, N.J. in 1795 when a Division of his Estate is made. (Surrogate Court Records, Morris Co., NJ.) The widow, Sarah (COOK) KENT seems to have remarried, following 1795, a "Mr. PAYNE." Shortly after 1795, sons, Jacob [KENT], John KENT now in their maturity, have removed to Clinton County, near Plattsburgh, N.Y. and taken up lands. The son [of Sarah COOK and Helmer KENT], Helmer KENT, Jr. subject of our sketch, although only a boy at the time, undoubtedly came with them. The records are obscure." And, “Helmer KENT [Jr.] was 22 years of age in 1808.” [Note from Michelle M. Roy: I don’t know how long it was before Helmer (Jr.) joined his brothers as stated in Allen L. Stratton’s book since it does appear that in 1802 a Helmigh KENT is still living in Pequannock, NJ. See below.] From History of "South Hero Island, Vermont – Volume II", compiled by Allen L. Stratton. Material was printed in 1980 and is located at the New England Historical Society in Boston, MA, 617.536.5740, www.newenglandancestors.org. I have also seen that this publication is listed as for purchase through the Grand Isle Historical Society in Grand Isle, Vermont. ***1802*** "KENT, Helmigh + Sarah, Mary, Agnes, ? C Peq. Tp. Morris Co., 1802 See NJ ???:D559" The meaning of the above is obscure. It was on a miscellaneous 3 x 5 index card in the Special Collections section of the Alexander Library at Rutgers University located at 169 College Avenue, New Brunswick, New Jersey, 732.932.7851, http://www.libraries.rutgers.edu/rul/libs/alex_lib/alex_lib.shtml. ***1814*** “Father [Helmer A. KENT] lived on the Island [South Hero on Grand Isle in Vermont] at the time of the Battle of Plattsburg in 1814. He was the captain of the home militia. They were not called out but Father and another officer took a small boat and crossed over. However, the battle was over when they arrived.” And “Mother also lived on the Island at that time and I have heard her tell of going, with others, to the top of the hill back of her home to watch the battle. Plattsburg can be seen from the Island.” Taken from “My Ninety-Five Milestones” by Margaret Fletcher Kent Paine. Printed by Austin C. Murray in Chicago, Illinois, in 1932.
