South Carolina Kennington researchers
I recently discovered that my gg grandma, Lavisia "Vissie" Turner's maiden name was Kennington. She was from Wilkinson Co., GA, born 1826, and married James Wilson Turner in 1850.(The marriage record says, J.W. Turner married Vicey Caninton in 1850 in Bibb Co., GA)
In the 1850 Wilkinson census, her and James are living with a Ryle family in Wilkinson Co.1850 census shows some of the elder Ryles were from SC.Living close to Jim and Vissie is a Nancy Cannington, born in SC, and her teenage daughter, Caroline. Nancy is the right age to possibly be Vissie's mama. Also living close by are a William Cannington, b SC, and family and a Brittan Cannington, b SC, and family. William and Brittan aren't old enough to be Vissie's father, may be older brothers.Nancy may be their mama.
By the 1860 census, my Jim and Vissie have moved to Turner family lands in Hancock Co., GA.Caroline has married a Williams, Nancy Kennington is living with them.William and family and Brittan and family are still in Wilkinson, but now their names are spelled Kennington.I noticed from the Kennington gen forum that these are common given names for a Kennington group in Lancaster Co., SC and surrounding counties.
The 1840 Wilkinson Co., GA census has Nancy Cannington, William Cannington, and Brittan Cannington.
A partial index listing of the 1830 census of Wilkinson Co. has an Absolum Cannington and a George Cannington. This is from the internet.I haven't had a chance to go the library to see the full census.
1820 has no Kenningtons or close spelled names.
Since I just discovered my Kennignton roots last week, I don't have anymore info to contribute.Hoping a South Carolina Kennington researcher may have a ____ Kennington who disappeared between 1820 and 1830. If you did, I found him, especially if his wife is named Nancy.Vissie was born in 1826 and census records say in GA.
Thanks
Steve Turner
