Sam was the youngest son of John Kennerly of Franklin Co., Tn; the son of John P. Kennerly, b c 1773 in Augusta Co., Va; the son of Thomas Kennerly, b Oct. 24, 1750 in Culpeper, Va; the son of James Kennerly, the son of Samuel Kennerly, sawyer, and his 2nd wife Ellin Buckley who came from England.
In 1734 they got a land grant in Orange (later Culpeper) Co. Samuel died in 1749, Ellin in 1756. Sons Thomas, James, daughters Elizabeth and Katherine. He had a son and two daughers by his first wife. James married Elizabeth Winston James, cousin of Patrick Henry. They moved to Augusta Co. where his brother, Thomas, b abt 1712, had extensive land holdings from his wife, Mary Margaret Bloodworth.
