I am a Kennerly from New York City.I come from the African American side of the Family.Attached is a email sent to me that may help you in your quest.
The Kennerly family came to the Virginia in the 1730's from England. The progenitor of the SC branch of the family was Thomas Kennerly b ca 1710 and d in 1771.His will was recorded in August 1771 in Craven County (I have the contents of this will).Thomas and his wife Mary Margaret Bloodworth had at least the 8 children mentioned in Thomas' will.Thomas was a land owner and a owned a grist and saw mill. His descendants settled around the area of Orangeburg.I am descended through his son James b 1752 d 1817 and his wife Mary Ann Holman.Their son Thomas b 1774 d 1844 married a Rebecca Whetstone and their daughter Mary Ann was my g-g-grand mother.I know that there is a Kennerly Road in Orangeburg, so I know they were around that area.My g-g-g-grandfather Thomas died in Barnwell County.
I have no information on any African American Kennerly's.However, I imagine that the Kennerly descendants of the original Thomas of Craven County owned slaves. His will makes reference to several slaves namely Peter, Brifto, Tom and wife Moll, Hannah, Ben, Will, Fibey, George, Tobey, Marey, Jack, Charles, Rose, Sam, Doctor, Tom, Bet, Shew, Judey, Lusey and Sara. These slaves were left to his various children and his wife.
I do not have a will for James and doubt if there is one, since Sherman burned most of the records of Orangeburg County. However, I plan another trip to Orangeburgh this winter to do more research.Thomas (grandson of the original Thomas) died without a will, but I do have his estate settlement papers from Barnwell County. In the sale of his estate there are mentioned slaves Orange, Charles, Erastus, Calsen and one woman and child Amery.
I know that many slave families took the name of their owners after emancipation. There is an excellent research library run by the Historical Society of Orangeburg. They might be able to help you.It is called the Salley Library.
I hope that this information has been helpful, if you would like copies of what I have, let me know.I will need your snail mail address to send you those copies.
