Hello Scott,
This may be the break I've been searching for over thirty years.
My ggggrandmother was Nancy Kennel. She was born 1799 in Kentucky and died 1870 in Wayne County, Missouri. She married George T. Butler about 1819 at Butlers Landing, Jackson County, Tennessee. George T. Butler owned land on the Dry Fork of Mill Creek near Butlers Landing. Located in that same area is a place named 'Kennel Hollow'. It was obviously named for a family by the name of Kennel, as the other hollows around it are Eads hollow, steele hollow, and others named for families that lived there. Here's the catch: I have never found any evidence whatsoever that anyone named Kennel ever lived in this location. I know her name was Kennel, as that was what was given in a biography on her son George Washington Hampton Butler in the Goodspeeds History of Southeast Missouri.
I have always wondered if the name was actually Kendal. There was a Solomon Kendal and his brother Francis Kendal with their families living near Butlers Landing, Jackson County, Tennessee at the time George T. Butler was there. They moved into this area from Barren County, Kentucky about 1804.
Now that you say that Kendal is often pronounced Kennel, I feel confident that Nancy Kennel was the daughter of Francis Kendal and Sally Denton. George T. Butler and Nancy Kennel named their first son Francis and their first daughter they named Sally.
