The kennedys of Burray are the original family of Dr John Kennedy of Kermuck, son of John Hereditary Constable of Aberdeen, with his first wife Margaret Burnett of Leys. His second wife was Jean McKenzie, the daughter of the Bishop of Orkney. From this marriage there were three boys MURDOCH, James, Alexander and a daughter Jean who married the Reverand Thomas Galloway.
After Dr Johns death the boys were brought up by the Mckenzies who basically stole the family estate and the Lordship of the Isle of Stroma. Murdoch went off the rails, was jealous, maybe mad in the end, had his estate stolen from him on his death bed by the Sinclairs. The other two sons were moved from Stroma to SouthRONALDSAY together with Alexander, Murdochs son Alexander who later married Margaret Gray of Roeberry, they in tirn had a son James who married Isabella Gray and had a son Alexander who went with the Hudson Bay Co to Canada, became a factor, this was the Kennedys of Canada and USA.
My Kennedy line is also from Stroma, but from the orignal wife Margaret Burnett, 4 generations on from Dr John, an Alexander became a miller originally married to Elizabeth Laird, who died leaving him with 6 or 7 children. He was born in 1760 in Stroma , moved to Burray in 1801, became a miller on Ecna Loch, a Baptist vicar, married again at 70 to Elizabeth Scott and had three more children, Alexander was my great grandfather.
The story is much more complicated than this, filled with adventure, essentially we are descended from Fergus Prince of Galloway 1090 to 1160 who married a daughter of King Henry 1 of England, his descendants were the Kennedys of Galloway, we are from the k of Dunure who moved to Aberdeen with their cousin King Robert the Bruce to fight the English. Kennedys were made Constables of the County.
Our immediate forefather Dr John was a valiant army officer in the Civil War, was made Physician to the Orkneys, on Stroma he had a herbal garden reputed to "cure all known Ails".
