He served in the militia under Col. Brandon after the fall of Charleston.

This Indenture made in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninty one the seventeenth day of November and in the fifteenth day of American Independancy between - Richard Burgess in the State of South Carolina and Union County of the one part and Archelaus Kenady of the State and County aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said Richard Burgess and Lydia his wife for and in consideration of the sum of ten pounds sterling money to them in hand and well and truly paid by the said Archelaus Kenady before the sealing and delivering of these present receipts whereof they the said Richard Burges and Lydia his wife doth hereby acknowledge have granted Bargained and sold and by these presents doth Grant Bargain

Archelaus Kennedy his heirs and assigns a tract of Land situate lying and being in the County and State aforesaid on the west side of a Branch of Enoree River called Frenchman's Creek beginning at a pine cornered on an old line turning from thence Nwestward to a box oak from thence E(ast)ward to white oak from thence N(orth)wesward bounded on land surveyed for Thomas Lamb to a box oak from thence Southwardly cornered upon a stake from thence Southeastward to said pine which being part of a survey and make by Abel Pearson Debly survey so the same being granted to John Hopkins his heirs and assigns for two hundred and two acres of Land duly Recorded in the secretarys office in Grant Book B No 5 page 174 which being conveyed from John Hopkins to said Richard Burgess the fifteenth day of the month and year above written to being supposed to be about twenty five acres of Land be the same more or less.Together with all and signed are the houses Buildings waters watercourses orchards woods timbers hereditaments thereunto belonging or in anywise appearing and the Remainder and Remainders rentsyears and profits of the said Tract and parcel of 2 twenty five acres of Land more or less and all the estate right title interest property claim and demand whatsoever of him the said Richard Burgess or Lydia his wife their heirs ofin or to the said Tract or parcel of Twenty five acres of land more or less and the premises and appertainances and every part and parcel thereof to have and to hold the said tract and parcel of twenty five acres of land more or less unto the said Archelaus Kennady his Heirs and assigns for Ever and Lastly they the said Richard Burgess and Lydia his wife their Heirs Executors administrators the said Tract or parcel of Land containing twenty five acres with the appertainances and premises

Know all men by these presents that I, Archelaus Cannady of said State and District aforesaid hath given and granted and by these presents do give and grant a tract or piece of land to William Cannady's children & their heirs & successors lying on the West Side of Frenchman's Creek bounded on the North by land belonging to Jason Canady's heirs on the West by lands belonging to the Widow Lawson & others, on the South by Hosea Canady's land & others on the East side by Frenchman's Creek.I bind myself my heirs Executors & assigns forever, to warrant & defend the said premises in behalf of the above named heirs & their successors forever with all the ways & woods waters & appurtenances thereunto.This made signed sealed and delivered in the presence of us in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & thirty seven being the sixty first year of American Independence.
