“THREE KENNEDY FAMILIES OF EARLY KNOX COUNTY, TENNESSEE”

I became interested in the Knox County Kennedys while investigating my great-great-grandfather, Hugh Johnson Kennedy. My Hugh first appeared when he married Jane Delaney in Greene County in 1818, and I have found no prior record of him. Knox County had a Hugh Kennedy who disappeared from all records in 1815, and I was trying to establish a link that would tie the two together. In doing so, I accumulated material on numerous Kennedys of Knox County. This article focuses on three prominent, but apparently unrelated, families of Kennedys who settled in Knox County:
1. The Rev. James Kennedy with his brothers Adam Kennedy and Hugh Kennedy settled in the area between the Holston and French Broad rivers in East Knox County and apparently were the first Kennedy family group. Tradition says they came before 1800, but the first written record I have found was dated 1805.
2. James Kennedy, Sr., of Grainger County came to Knox County in 1812 with his Sons James Kennedy Jr., William S. Kennedy, and John Montgomery Kennedy.
3. The Walter Kennedy family settled on Fourth Creek in the Bearden area of Knox County. A Walter Kennedy who I think was this person married in Jefferson County in 1796. We know Walter was in Kentucky in 1815 and back in Knox County by 1817.
THE REV. JAMES KENNEDY OF EAST KNOX COUNTY
There was a Vance who descended from this man and did extensive research on the family. There are Vance Papers in the McClung Historical Collection (Knox County, Tennessee, Public Library), which record the family, beginning in Ireland, and their move to the United States. James was the son of Samuel Kennedy. Samuel Kennedy was the son of James Kennedy and Jane Hunter and was born in Ireland. He married Rebecca Meek in Ireland and had his children there. Samuel and Rebecca had nine children; seven sailed with them to America. Samuel died at sea. We can identify three boys who came to Knox County: The Rev. James Kennedy, Adam Kennedy, and Hugh Kennedy.
The family was in Chester County, Pennsylvania, before coming to Knox County. The Rev. James Kennedy married Mary Smith of East Noddingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania. James Kennedy, Sr., of Grainger and Knox counties also came from Chester County, Pennsylvania. There is no known link between the two families, but the name James was prominent in both.
The Vance Papers claim that the Rev. James Kennedy came to Knox County in 1797. The first written record that I have found was a deed dated 1 March 1805 for 274 acres of land on the French Broad River. (Knox County, TN Deed Book R, Vol. 1, p.306) Tax records show him with 274 acres on tax lists of 1806,1807, and 1812.
In 1819 he bought 80- and 90-acre tracts on Swan Pond Creek from John Witt, bringing him up to 444 acres. He is shown with 444 acres in the 1826 Knox County tax list, and Kennedy heirs are shown with 444 acres in the 1827 and 1828 tax lists. Swan Pond Creek is in East Knox County in what is known as the Forks of the River area. Dr. J. G. M. Ramsey refers to property owned by James Kennedy located “on the north side of the French Broad river about five miles above the Lebanon Church.” (J. G. M. James Kennedy and his wife are buried in Lebanon-in-the-Forks Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Their tombstones read as follows:
Rev. James Kennedy born Dec. 2,1768 died August 30, 1826 age 57 years 8 months 28 days.
Mary Kennedy wife of James Kennedy born April 10 1777, died Oct. 11, 1853 aged 76 years, 6 months, I day.
The Rev. James Kennedy was not among the list of ministers of the church, but there was a gap from 1813 to 1836 in the minister list. He left a will naming his children and leaving land to sons Samuel and James.

JAMES KENNEDY, SON OF THE REV. JAMES KENNEDY
James Kennedy married Martha J. Armstrong on 9 September 1847. The 1860 census lists children James (10), Moses (8), Alex (6), Robert (4), and William (2). There was a Mary E. (1) listed in the 1850 census, but she is not in the 1860 census. A very flowery obituary for James Kennedy appeared in the Knoxville Tribune (see Vance Papers), but it gave no genealogical data.
Mary filed suit against son Samuel in 1841 (see Vance Papers). The Rev. James Kennedy’s will required James and Samuel to support their mother, Mary. Mary claimed in the suit: “Now may it please your Honour, the aforesaid Samuel Kennedy has in his possession all the most valuable part of the said Plantation, and has never contributed anything for the support of your oratrix and utterly refuses so to do.” At this time Samuel was 37 years old, and James was 21 years old.

Mary left a long will dated 11 June 1853 and proven November 1853 (Knox Co., TN Will Book 9, p. 435). She named sons James and Samuel; daughters Mary S. Vance, Elizabeth Ann Lamon, Nancy McMillan, Emily Johnson, Jane I. Blake, and Margaret Vance; and grandchildren Mary Jane Armstrong and James K. Gibson.

ADAM KENNEDY, BROTHER OF THE REV. JAMES KENNEDY
Adam Kennedy was deeded 100 acres at the head of Lyons Creek in the Forks of the River area on 1 March 1805 by Alexander McMillan. (Knox Co., TN Deed Book P1, p. 100) He is on the 1826 and 1827 Knox County tax lists for 200 acres, one white poll, and one slave. His will was dated 7 December 1831. (Knox Co., TN Will Book 5, p. 150) He named his wife Elizabeth D. Kennedy and children Polly Kennedy, Samuel Kennedy, Margaret R. Kennedy, Elizabeth A. Kennedy, and Rebecca Kennedy. A Polly Kennedy married William C. Wiseman, 30 December 1818, in Blount County. A Samuel Kennedy married Margaret E. Nail, 19 December 1844, in Knox County. These may or may not be Adam’s children.

HUGH KENNEDY, BROTHER OF THE REV. JAMES KENNEDY
Hugh claimed he married Eleanor Walker in 1807. After six months she delivered a baby of which Hugh was not the father. Hugh petitioned for a divorce, starting a long court struggle, which ended in 1815. (Tennessee Senate and House Journal, Sept 7 to Oct. 21, 1812. Monday, October 12th, 1812, House of Representatives.) Adam M. and James signed some papers for Hugh; James Kennedy and John Gibson were surety for Hugh and were sued by Eleanor (D 1810 Circuit 134/42 and P 1810 Circuit 134/42 box 1). I have found no record of Hugh paying any taxes or owning land. He disappears from the record in 1815. Eleanor accused him of woman chasing and false pretenses.
My ancestor Hugh Kennedy appeared in Greene County in 1818; I have found no record of him before 1818. Records neither prove nor disprove conclusively whether the two Hughs are the same person.

JAMES KENNEDY, SR., OF GRAINGER COUNTY
James Kennedy, Sr., came to Grainger County, Tennessee, from Berkeley County, Virginia, about 1805. He was a grandson of David Kennedy, Sr., of Faggs Manor, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and son of David Kennedy, Jr., of Berkeley County, Virginia. Kith and Kin by John Russell Sampson, (Richmond, Va.: William Byrd Press, 1922), gives much data on the earlier generations. On 7 May 1789, David Kennedy, Jr., of Berkeley County deeded land to James Kennedy. (Berkeley County, VA, Deed Book 9, p. 192.) Samuel and Nancy Kennedy were witnesses. James was probably over 21 to be deeded land, which places his birth before 1768.
James Kennede [sic] married Sarah Stephenson 29 December 1792 in Berkeley County. (Genealogical Research Systems, Automated Archives, Inc. Compact disc #229, Marriage Records Early-1850, Southern States.) She is buried in the First Presbyterian Church cemetery in Knoxville.
The next record of James is in Berkeley County on 8 November 1802. He and John McCleary executed a note promising to pay John Blackford, six months from that date, $137.20. The note came due, and there followed a long battle to collect. Suit was first brought in Berkeley County 22 January 1805. On 27 November 1805 Kennedy was ordered to pay. However, the sheriff was forced to collect on the debt from John McCleary and David Hunter, who posted bail for Kennedy, “said James Kennedy not living in the county.” By May of 1806 the action had moved to Grainger County, Tennessee. In February 1807 a Grainger County jury found Kennedy had not paid, and the case was appealed to the Superior Court.
James Kennedy was in Grainger County by August 1805 when he obtained leave to keep an ordinary, or house of public entertainment, at Bean Station. He was listed 22 times in Grainger County Court minutes. The last reference was 25 May 1811. Most were routine renewals of leave to keep his public house. There was one unusual listing, however. On 6 November 1806 (Mary Ashburn vs. James Kennedy), the defendant was found guilty of “traverse conversation” and assessed $100 plus costs.
James Kennedy, Jr., served in the War of 1812. His widow applied for a pension and stated in the application (dated 1889) that James, Jr., “moved from Grainger to Knox as part of his father’s family about 1812.” Apparently the whole James Kennedy, Sr., family moved to Knox County about 1812.
After his first wife Sarah died in Knoxville in 1821, James Kennedy, Sr., married Mrs. Nancy Heard of McMinn County on 15 January 1824. (Knoxville Register, Vol. VIII, No. 389, 23 January1824.) James, Sr., died in McMinn County October 1825. His will was proven in the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of McMinn County on 7 March 1826 by Henry Bradford and Stannix Hord (CR2-138), but no copy of the will has been found.

Kith & Kin lists six children for James, Sr., and Sarah: James, Jr., Diana, Maria Stephenson, William Stephenson, Samuel Boyd, and John Montgomery. We find record of all the children in Tennessee.
JAMES KENNEDY, JR.
James Kennedy, Jr., was the oldest son of James, Sr. He married Jane Holt 25 June 1828. They had two boys, James and William, a girl Emily, who lived one day, and a girl Elizabeth.

James died intestate in 1838. His brother William S. Kennedy was appointed administrator of his estate. (Knox County, TN, Will Book 6, p. 270.) The list of property shows that James Kennedy, Jr., was a wealthy man. He owned 24 slaves, 50 shares of stock, sawmills, gristmills, property owned jointly with William, and notes and accounts receivable totaling $65,702. There were many references to James Kennedy in the records of Knox County and many land transactions involving James, Sr., or James, Jr., or William S., and the Knox County index of deeds shows many sales of land by the James Kennedy heirs, some as late as the 1860s.
DIANA KENNEDY
A Diana Kennedy married Joseph Vick 13 November 1822 in Davidson County, Tennessee. This may or may not be James’ daughter.
MARIA STEPHENSON KENNEDY
Maria Stephenson Kennedy married Pryor Lea 6 October 1818. She is buried in the First Presbyterian Church cemetery in Knoxville. Her tombstone bears this inscription: “Mrs. Maria Lea Who died Mar. 12,1828. Aged 28 Years, 11 Months and 10 Days. A Daughter of James and Sarah Kennedy. The Consort of Pryor Lea. The mother of James Kennedy Lea, Lavinia Jarnagin Lea, Sarah Stephenson Lea and a daughter born lifeless on the day of her mother’s death. One grave conceals the Mother and babe, beneath this humble family memorial.”
WILLIAM STEPHENSON KENNEDY
William Stephenson Kennedy was born 2 July 1806 and died 26 March 1875. He first married Elizabeth G. Cox 15 October 1833. Elizabeth lived only two years after their marriage and was buried in the First Presbyterian Church cemetery. Her stone reads, “Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Kennedy. Consort of William S. Kennedy who departed this life November 3, 1835. Aged 20 years, 2 months and 9 days.” A second stone suggests the cause of her death: “Sacred to the memory of William Lewis, son of W. S. and E. G. Kennedy, departed this life on the day of his birth October 12, 1835.” Elizabeth lived just 22 days after that.
On 31 January 1843, William married Sophia Park, daughter of James Park and sister of the Rev. James Park, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. Sophia’s obituary in the Kennedy vertical file of the McClung Historical Collection lists their children: Mrs. Sallie May of Atlanta, Mrs. Sophia P. Hunter of Knoxville, Samuel Kennedy (former Knoxville comptroller who died 22 September 1896, aged 46 years), Dr. John M. Kennedy, and James P. Kennedy (former member of the Board of Aldermen who died 7 January 1898). Sophia Kennedy died 1 March 1899.
William S. Kennedy was unmarried in 1830 and 1840. He does not appear in any census of that time, but his brother in 1830 and his sister-in-law in 1840 were heads of household with unnamed male of the right age to be William S. Kennedy.

SAMUEL BOYD KENNEDY
Nancy Heard, the second wife of James Kennedy, Sr., in a will dated 13 June 1836, left half of her land on the Hiwassee River in McMinn County to “Samuel and John Kennedy, the youngest sons of James Kennedy Sr.” (McMinn County, TN, Wills and Estate Records, 1828-1870.) There is one reference to a Samuel B. Kennedy who was admitted to the Knox County bar circa 1830. Soon after he moved to Mississippi and “died two or three years later.” This may or may not be Samuel Boyd Kennedy.
JOHN MONTGOMERY KENNEDY
John Montgomery apparently stayed in Knoxville and became a doctor. His tombstone in the First Presbyterian Church cemetery reads: “John M. Kennedy MD Born 11 Nov. 1811 died 18 Aug. 1842.” He left a will, dated 2 August 1842, naming his “best friend and wife Cynthia.” (Knox County, TN, Will Book 8, p. 13.) No children were mentioned. A later record tells us the estate was insolvent. It appears this John M. Kennedy died without living offspring, though there is a tombstone in the First Presbyterian Church cemetery which reads: “Sarah Infant Daughter of J. M. and C. W. Kennedy 1842.”
John was not listed in the census of 1830 or 1840. He may have been in the household of his brother in 1830 and his sister-in-law in 1840.
William S. Kennedy, the brother of this John Montgomery Kennedy, MD, named a son
John Montgomery Kennedy who also became a doctor in Knox County. The latter lived in
Knoxville and died in 1935. There is an interesting article in the Kennedy vertical file
(McClung Historical Collection) on his start as a doctor.

WALTER KENNEDY OF KNOX COUNTY
The 1850 census indicates Walter Kennedy was born circa 1778 in Pennsylvania. All three of the early Kennedy families in this article had early Pennsylvania ties. Walter died circa 1854.
Walter Kennedy was the first or the last of the Kennedy families to come to Knox County depending on the interpretation of following:
Walter Kennedy married Anne Huzy in Jefferson County, Tennessee, on 8 October 1796. (Genealogical Research Systems, Automated Archives, Inc. Compact disc #229, Marriage Records Early-1850, Southern States.) Walter of Knox County was born circa 1778, making him 18 in 1796.
Walter Kennedy was on jury duty, Blount County, August 1801.
Walter Kennedy was on Blount County tax rolls in 1805 (150 acres, 1 white poll).
He was not found in Blount County after that date.
We cannot, at this time, prove that all the above records are for the same person; however, Walter is not a common name, and we are not aware of a second Walter Kennedy in the area, so we think it likely they are all one person.
Walter moved to Kentucky after 1805. His first wife died while he lived in Kentucky. He
married his second wife, Judith Ashmore, in Woodford County, Kentucky, on 31 July 1813. (Genealogical Research Systems, Automated Archives, Inc. Compact disc #229, Marriage Records Early-1850, Southern States.) He was back in Knox County by 1817 when he purchased 150 acres on Fourth Creek. (Knox County, TN, Deed Book S1, p. 162.) He was a charter subscriber to the Library Petition dated 1817.
We have been unable to develop a good list of his children. The 1830 census shows five boys and five girls in the Walter Kennedy household. At least two boys and one girl were old enough to be from this first marriage, but they are not identified at this time. Walter died intestate, so we may never know; however, we are able to identify three boys and two girls through census records, who appear to be his children:

Mary U. Rothrock wrote, in The French Broad-Holston Country, that “[Walter] Kennedy, though without medical training, was a kind of medical nurse and practicing physician. He also operated a fulling and carding mill for several years as is evidenced by advertisements in the Knoxville Register between 1820 and 1825. . . W. L. Kennedy, son of Walter, was born February 23, 1824, in his father’s log cabin and died in a log house near his mill opposite the present Towle Spring.” The 1850 census supports Ms. Rothrock’s statement as we find the following:

Walter Kennedy died intestate circa 1854. (Knox County, TN, Estate Book 12, pp. 44, 78, and 326.) G. B. Kennedy made bond to administer the estate. Purchasers from the estate settlement included George B. Kennedy, Walter Kennedy, W. B. Kennedy, and Wm. L. Kennedy. The estate settlement did not name children and has no record of how the money was distributed. The estate was valued at $2,950.34.
