Kennedys/SC/AL/1900 Census
I have for a long time been searching for information about my greatgrandmother, Sarah Francis (Fannie) Kennedy Whitten.I know that she was born in the western part of South Carolina, in the Abbeville/Edgefield area.
In about 1884 she married James Austin Whitten, and had three children while they were living in South Carolina, Susie A., Mamie Francis (my grandmother), and James Austin, Jr.
At some point they moved to the western part of Jefferson County, Alabama.James Austin Whitten was a miner, and in 1893, he was killed in a mining accident.
I understood that her father was named Tom (or Thomas, perhaps Thomas B.) Kennedy, and that she had a brother named Will, both of whom were born in SC, but both of whom moved also to Jefferson County, AL.
Now, in checking out the 1900 Census, I have some new information that is probably relevant. I found:
KENNEDY, BOLLIVER, head of household, W/M, born Jan 1826, born SC, both parents born SC, miner.
KENNEDY, MARY, wife, W/F, born August 1837, born SC, both parents born SC.
KENNEDY, THOMAS B., son, W/M, age 34, born SC, both parents born SC.
The thing that attracted my notice, other than their being born in SC, was the fact that he was a miner, and that the son was named Thomas B.
I'm not absolutely sure about the spelling of the elder Kennedy's name, but Bolliver is close enough. That name is not familiar to me, but perhaps his name was Thomas Boliver, and he went by Bolliver.
My father's cousin, with whom I consult from time to time, did not remember the name Bolliver, but he said that Fannie Kennedy Whitten had a brother named Tom, and that Tom had children named Tom, Will, Maude, and perhaps another daughter, named Fannie.
I hope there is someone out there who will recognize this somewhat unusual name, and help me out with these people.
THANKS!
