artifacts for Kindig, Haverstick, Bender, Gall, Meylin/Mylin, Zercher, Bachman,
I'm the family archivist for certain Haverstick artifacts that include a very large pulpit/family bible printed in Nuremburg, Germany in 1788. Beautifully scripted in the front is, "This is the property of Christian Haberstich for the year of our Lord 1823 Conestogo Township, Lancaster County, state of Pennsylvania." Christian was born in Lancaster, Co., PA on 7 Feb 1795, moved to Ohio in 1823, then to Indiana in 1860. The bible may have been a moving-away present.
I also have two baptismal frakturs - one that reads: "Maria Haverstick, a daughter of John Gall and wife Maria Gall,a daughter of Michael Bender, was born the 23 day of May 1800 in the City of Lancaster, in the County of Lancaster in the state of Pennsylvania in North America and was baptized on the 4th day of June in the year of the Lord 1800 by the Revd. John Martin Beck. Her sponsors were her parents."
The other baptismal fraktur reads, "Amos Haverstick, son of Christian Haverstick and wife Maria a daughter of John Gall, was born on the 23 day of December in the year of our Lord, 1820 in the Township of Conestogoe in the county of Lancaster in the state of Pennsylvania in North America and was babtised on the 25th day of August in the year of our Lord, 1823(?) by the Revd. Mr. Hoffmyer. His sponsors were his parents."
Because of the unique style of script and embellishments plus the consistent mispelling of "Conestogoe" these frakturs are considered by the Heritage Center Museum in Lancaster to be the early work of fraktur artist Eli Haverstick. The information on these two frakturs is in-filled in a printed angel-type form "Printed and sold by Henry B. Sage" circa 1826. It is the English version of several other Sage imprints done in German and produced during the 1820's.
Nine other Eli Haverstick's frakturs are identified and photographed by the Heritage Center Museum, most were produced in the 1830's, all nine are completely original art (not an in-filled printed form like mine), most were signed on the back, and are extremely valuable - $20,000 - $30,000. Interestingly, they can't seem to identify Eli Haverstick. The assumption is that he was a school teacher since he was educated and he doesn't show up in any tax records - teachers usually lived with families. My guess is that he is a grandson of Col. Michael Haverstick and possibly a son of John Haverstick.
