Thanks Fred. Good info. I do have a copy of that death certificate, and it helps straighten out some things. In particular, it names Jacob Kendall as Peyton's father.
Ann Davis made an invaluable find when she turned up an obituary for Reuben Kendall (1834 Shenandoah Co, VA - 1909 Jackson Co, OH). The obit identifies Reuben as Peyton's brother. Other siblings listed in the obit were Caroline (Kendall) Pyles and Howard Kendall.
The identity of Peyton's mother is slightly fuzzy. Peyton's death certificate has her name as Elizabeth Newman, while Reuben's death certificate has her name as Catherine Newman. "Catherine" matches up with Boogher's "Gleanings of Virginia History", which gives the connection from the Newman side. I now believe that her name was Catherine and that Peyton's death certificate is in error.
We're still working on Jacob's father. Reuben is a possibility, but haven't found solid evidence.
I'd like to hear from anyone who has information on this family. I'll be happy to share what I have so far.
