Mr. Patrick O'Hara -
As JEK and I read more and more of the accepted line and block chart related information we find more and more areas that seem to be in most cases overly simplified.
Some people are a little less broad in their intitial number of Williams, and Thomases, and Johns during the 1600 to 1850 period than others. My observations are that there are a lot of them in the Kendall category.
The direct line that Norman F. Kendall worked with seems to be much more cohesive than some of the others doing research on the family ... and that gives us a pretty sound
data base we believe. My use of NFK books goes back to 1952
when my grandfather gave me one after Norman sent him a fresh one ... I am 57 and have pretty well worn the pages.
If we were to start over again it would be with the Ross Kendall Family Bible which we have with the list of children etc etc that was put in by that era ... my father,JE Kendall, lived with his grandfather Ross for awhile and has a good memory. The most pertinent issue for researchers being that he knows there were 2 separate and distinct Kendall families that had children attending the small Brink , WV school over the course of a couple generations ; that alone opens a wide window for some duplications if that is not taken into play.
An important thing in our approach is the overlap of businesses, work, and relationships that form "common threads" that make geographic moves etc etc make more sense.
Some things are cycles ; the early trip to New Orleans by
Kendalls on flatboats replayed to a degree by Jerome in my grandfather's days and myself in the 60s.
Work skills like rigging of pulleys, forging, knots, etc etc
are hand-me-down things just as basic in the days before they left VA as they are today ... but much of it now appraoching extinction.
A long path to answer the question about how comfortable am I with my information ... anybody could be wrong, and there are obviously a lot of excellent researchers with more credentials than JE and I have ... about all we know about it is that we were told the old stories by people who were told by generations before them as far as our line of Kendalls is concerned.
