Hi Krissy,
It certainly has a German "ring" to it, but actually comes from England/Scotland.
My German professors always used to think it sounded German, too, but I've lived there and looked into it. The German equivalent would be "Kempner". There are no native German "Kempsters".
My Kempster ancestors (great-great-grandfather, Ernest Brazell Kempster, Sr. immigrated to the US from Edinburgh, Scotland, but I don't think the name is native to Scotland, as there's no "Clan Kempster".
