Write for copies of his Confederate Civil War files at the National Archives to include all units that he was in and also write for copy of Eliza Ann's pension application to find out why it was rejected.
It would seem unlikely that your John would change name to John W. Kenny. Probably just the way it was written that looked like "Kenny" and maybe a transcription problem.
