Franklin Co, VA, Kemps to Callaway Co & Pettis Co, MO in early 1830's
A great deal is known of the Franklin Co, VA Kemps who migrated to Callaway and Pettis Counties, MO in the 1830's.
However, very early research on this line seems to be lacking. Most all researchers have stopped with John Kemp who married Mary Polly Craighead.Either further research is too difficult or most have given up.
Some researchers of this line have connected John Kemp erroneously (I believe) to an English Thomas Camp who was married to a Barron and/or married to a Marshall. There was a John Camp, but he is not the John Kemp who married Mary Craighead.
Someone from the Camp/Barron/Marshall line needs to come forward if possible with documentation. But best of all would be that a male of the Kemp/Craighead line would get yDNA tested because a male of the Camp/Barron/Marshall has already been tested and a comparison could be made which could either connect or disconnect the lines!
More. . .
John Kemp who married Mary Polly Craighead was living in Goochland Co, VA in 1767.Source of this info is. . .
The Douglas Register: Being a Detailed Record of Births, Marriages and Deaths Together with Other Interesting Notes as Kept by the Rev. William Douglas from 1750 to 1797; An Index of Goochland Wills; Notes on the French-Huguenot Refugees who Lived in Manakin-Town.By William MacFarlane Jones, c1928, Births: St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, VA, page 167 - John Camp & Mary Craghill, a son named William born Sep 28, 1767. Baptized Dec 19, 1767.
The above record provides the info that John Kemp (often spelled Camp) was born c1747 or earlier. And that John/Mary were living in St. James Northam Parish, Goochland Co, VA in 1767.
John/Mary had other children.I am betting that their son named Thomas Kemp was also born in Goochland Co, VA in either 1761 or 1763.However, I don't think there is a parish record for his birth.
The book A History of the Pioneer Families of the Pioneer Families of Missouri: With. . .by William Smith Bryan and Robert Rose, published 1876 by Bryan, Brand & Co., chapter "Callaway County," page 349 (uncertain of page number) states:
"Kemp.-John Kemp, of England, married a Miss Craighead, and settled in Franklin county, Va. They had--Thomas, Robert, William, Jordan, John, and Martha. John married Fannie Dudley, and settled in Callaway county in 1832. They had--Dudley, Jordan, William, Milley, and Polly. Thomas Kemp married Esther Maxey, of Virginia, and they had--Walter, John, William, Robert, James, Mary, Martha, Susan, Nancy, Lucy, Joanna, Elizabeth, and Sarah W. . . ."
So most researchers of this John Kemp/Mary Craighead line state John Kemp was born in England.I don't think any real documentation has been put forth. However, it is surely true that John Kemp was NOT born in Franklin Co, VA.He "settled in" Franklin Co but was not born there.
Franklin Co, VA was not created until 1785-1786 from Henry, Patrick, and Bedford Counties, VA.And records indicate that John Kemp was in Henry Co from at least 1778 forward until his lands wound up in Franklin Co.
I strongly urge a direct male descendant of the Kemp/Craighead line (i.e.,Kemp>Kemp>Kemp>Kemp,etc.) to get yDNA tested.
I would also hope that anyone with documentation of John Kemp/Mary Craighead please come forward.
I do see in the Douglas Register a birth record. . .
for Jordan Kemp in Goochland Co, VA on 28 Feb 1764 to Sarah Kemp and Samuel Mylom (Milam).
I also see posted at rootsweb without documentation that Sarah Kemp/Samuel Milam had a son name Dudley Kemp born c1767.
The above two items are interesting because John Kemp/Mary Craighead also named one of their sons "Jordan", and the surname "Dudley" is very much connected to the Kemp/Craighead line.
Any connection between Sarah Kemp and John Kemp? This is an avenue to explore.
Any help appreciated on this line.It would be especially helpful for a male descendant of the Franklin Co, VA>Callaway Co, MO Kemps to get yDNA tested.
