Jacob Kemp & Julia Luton of Maryland, parents of Isaac Kemp of Madison Co., Ohio
I am looking for help identifying Jacob Kemp and Julia Luton, parents of 1911 (year of death) Isaac Colon Kemp of Madison Co., Ohio, (place of death).I suspect a connection to the descendants of the Conrad Kemp of Frederick Co., Maryland, but have not been able to make the connection. The following is a summary of what I have been able to determine about possible connections.Any help or direction would be appreciated.
Isaac Colon Kemp was born 8 June 1827 in New Market, Frederick Co., Maryland and died 24 March 1911 in London, Madison Co., Ohio.[1]A biographical sketch published in a local history said his parents were Jacob Kemp and Julia Luton.[2]This work does not appear to be totally accurate. For instance, it says “…His early life was spent with his parents. In 1855 he came to London, and for twenty years was engaged in the grocery business.” However, Isaac C. Kemp, 23, born in Maryland, working as a grocery assistant, is head of household with his wife, Ellen, 22, born in Ohio, and James Clark, 23, plasterer, born in Ohio.[3]Unfortunately, this is the only Kemp family in Madison Co., Ohio, so it remains uncertain as to the origins of his family, despite the statement in the biography cited above.
Ohio Census Analysis
The 1850 Census for Ohio shows a significant number of Kemps born in Maryland, including Jacob Kemp of Perry Twp., Shelby Co., Ohio, age 65.[4] His wife Mary, 68, was also born in Ohio. The family appears to include a son Joseph, 27, Ohio, whose wife had died, leaving a three year old Mary A. Kemp, another son, Richard, 21, and his wife Matilda, 21, and another son, Lewis, 28, and his wife, Catherine, 23. Unfortunately, there is nothing to suggest a connection between this Jacob Kemp and 1911 Isaac Kemp of Madison Co., Ohio.
The Census also shows Jacob Kemp, 63, living in Hardy Twp., Holmes Co., Ohio, born in Germany, but living with his wife Magdalena, also born in Germany.[5] It seems unlikely this is the same Jacob Kemp.
I have not found a Julia Kemp in the 1850 Census for Ohio.
Maryland Census Analysis
1851 Jacob Kemp of Montgomery Co., Maryland
The 1850 Census for Maryland shows Jacob Kemp, 76, retired, born in Maryland, living with Sarah, 66, George Kemp, 29, millwright, and Susan 22.[6] Living nearby was Jacob Kemp, Jr., 30, millwright, with wife Ann, 31, and children Sarah G.,7, Mary V., 6, John P., 3, Jacob 1, and Wm. H. Gates, 15, laborer.[7] Although Jacob was listed as the head of household, it seems probable that he was living with his son, George, based upon Jacob Kemp’s listing in the 1840 Census for Montgomery Co., Md., where is was shown as 60-70, with one male, 20-30, his wife 50-60, one woman, 30-40, and one girl, 10-15.[8]
In 1840 he was 60-70 years old, his wife was living, and he had one male 20-30 living in his household.[9] Jacob Kemp is present in Montgomery Co., Md., in 1800,[10] 1810,[11] and 1820 Census.[12] From these reports we can infer that Jacob Kemp was born about 1774, and that his wife was born up to ten years later, which is consistent with the 1850 Census. The marriage records of Maryland[13] show Jacob Kemp married Sarah Runkles 24 June 1802 in Frederick Co., Md. In 1810, Jacob Kemp was living next to Peter Kemp, who was over 45. Peter Kemp died testate in Montgomery Co., Md., between 7 December and 30 December 1815, naming his wife Sarah, minor son John, and Jacob and Peter Kemp, sons of Jacob Kemp.[14] Peter Kemp and Jacob Kemp qualified as executors to the estate of Nicholas Kemp 24 April 1779, implying they were brothers, and sons of Nicholas.[15] In summary, the census data indicate this man is not the father of 1911 Isaac C. Kemp, and another student of the family has not included him in the list of children of Jacob Peter Kemp.[16] This same researcher indicates that the elder Jacob Kemp was born in Germany about 1738 and died in Frederick Co., Md., in 1786.
Also shown in 1840 is another Jacob Kemp, who is also 60-70 years old, with his wife of similar age, plus two males 20-30, one female 10-15, and one female 20-30.[17] At present, I am not certain who this man is.
Kemps of Frederick Co., Maryland
Assuming the family information is correct that Isaac Kemp was born in New Market, (Frederick Co.) Maryland, the 1850 Census was examined for evidence of Jacob Kemp but no one of that name was found. However, restricting analysis to New Market only shows Solomon Kemp, 80, born in Maryland, is living in the household of Catherine Arrowood (?Ironwood),[18] and next door to Joseph Kemp, 45, blacksmith, born in Maryland, with Ruth S Kemp, 23, James S. Kemp, 20, and Joseph C. W., 11, all born in Maryland.[19]
In 1840 Solomon Kemp is in New Market, Frederick Co., Md., with himself, 70-80, and one boy under five, plus two girls 15-20, one woman 40-50, and his wife, also 70-80.[20] He is living next door to Joseph Kemp, [10011-00001]. In 1830, Solomon Kemp is listed in District 9, Frederick Co., Md., [000000001-000000001], next to Joseph Kemp, [10011-00011], and Bernard Kemp, [10012-10001].[21] Also listed in the 9th District was “Debora” Kemp of Petersville [0101-100001].[22]
In 1820 Solomon Kemp is the only person of that surname in the 9th District[23] and has three sons, one 16-18, and two 16-26, and one daughter 16-26. The 1810 Census was not divided by township, but the 1800 Census showed Solomon Kemp in the Buckeystown Dist. 1, and is listed next to Peter Kemp, Sr.[24] Also listed are Christian Kemp, Gerdrout Kemp, Henry Kemp, Lodewick Kemp, and Peter Kemp, Jr.
Bernard Kemp, who was living next to Solomon Kemp in 1830 is present in 1840 living in Petersville.[25] He is present there in 1850 also, age 49, working as a wagon maker, born in Maryland, with his wife, Mary, and children Milton, 17, Emily 16, Oliver, 14, Catherine, 10, Joseph, 7, and McClain (male) 5.
The most plausible conclusion is that Solomon Kemp’s three sons were Bernard Kemp, b. 1801, Joseph W. Kemp, b. 1805, and the husband of Deborah Kemp. Unfortunately, there is nothing to indicate this was the elusive Jacob Kemp, husband of Julia Luton.

[17] 1840 Census Montgomery Co., Maryland, 5th District, p. 300. Of interest, on the same page are Margaret Lyddane, living alone, age 30-40, and Michael Lyddane, age 80-90, with two males 20-30, one 15-20, one female 15-20, three females 20-30, and one female 50-60. Could this Michael “Lyddane” be the father of Julia Luton? The Soundex values are equivalent.
