Isaac Hudson Kelso

I think I have broken down a long-time brick wall, Isaac Hudson Kelso of Alabama and Mississippi.

I have come to belive that Isaac Hudson Kelso was the son of James Kelso (who ended up in Texas), who was in turn the son of Henry Kelso who helped found the town of Fayetteville in Lincoln County, Tennessee. I also belive that the James who always seemed to settle near Isaac Hudson Kelso was not his brother but his cousin. Here's how I came to this realization...

The Henry Kelso who founded Fayetteville, Tennessee in Lincoln County was know to have a son named James who moved from Tennessee, to Mississippi, and then to Texas. Another of Henry's sons, Alfred, moved to Texas first and was a hero of the Texas Revolution, but left his sons Alfred, Jr. and James, behind for his brother James (presumedly "our" James) to raise.

Marion County, Alabama, 1830
James Kelso, with
1 male <5 (probably Isaac Hudson Kelso)
1 male 5-10 (probably cousin Alfred Jr.)
1 male 20-30 (James)
2 females <5 (unknown daughters)
1 female 20-30 (wife)

Yalobusha County, Mississippi, 1840
James Kelso, with
2 m <5
2m 5-10 (cousin James R.?)
1m 15-20 (Isaac Hudson?)
1m 20-30 (cousin Alfred Jr.?)
1m 40-50 (father James)
1f <5
1f 5-10
1f 10-15
1f 15-20
Appears that his (1st) wife was dead by 1840

In 1880, Isaac Hudson Kelso listed his father's birthplace as Ohio and his mother's as Indiana.

1850 the James Kelso in the DeWitt County, Texas Federal Census matches this James. He says he was born in Kentucky which is very close to the Ohio claim made by his supposed son, Isaac Hudson, who had stayed back in Mississippi.

James does have a (second?) wife, Mary Ann, age 37, in the 1850 census. She was born in Tennessee. The children born after 1840 are assumed to be those of the second wife.

All of the above taken together gives this researcher enough confidence to proceed on the assumption that Isaac Hudson Kelso was the son of James and grandson of Henry Kelso of Lincoln County, Tennessee.
