Dear Alan

May I suggest that the military service records of your Grandfather may be found at The National Archives (formerly PRO) in Kew, London. If you cannot get there personally, I can recommend an experienced professional researcher to find this information for you. Please email me off list for this information.

The search page for the TNA is:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
which will allow you to search the medals for WW1.

Your grandfather will almost definitely appear in the 1901 census, and possibly the 1891 (not sure how young/old he was in WW1, but assuming he had the rank of Captain in WW1, then he was more than a young kid). You can access the census records online by subscription at www.ancestry.co.uk (recommend you only need the basic subscription to the Census collection at this stage).

From census information you can then find out your grandfather's approximate year of birth, there is a free online search of BDM records http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl - it is incomplete, but the majority of the records before 1900 have been done.

Another resource for local BDM records is http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ These series of county BDMs (you can get to others from there) are fairly incomplete, but you can sometimes find things not in the national registrations.

Actually, a quick check of FreeBDM shows a Charles Hall KELSALL born in the September Quarter of 1896 in the Oldham registration district. You also need to note the Volume (8d) and Page (635) to order the certificate.

You can now order BDM certificates online at:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

After you have the birth certificate, then you go back to the census (start with 1891) and find his parents.

An additional resource which is Pay Per View (PPV) for BDM index information is http://www.1837online.com/HomeServlet but it can be a bit expensive unless you are fairly certain on the year of the event you are looking for. Also, the credits expire if unused.

That should be enough information to get you started.

Regards
Anne
