Found him!
Here are Max's parents from the 1880 census of Milwaukee:

KELLING, Fritz, age 30, works in cigar store, b. Mecklenburg, both parents b. Mecklenburg (b. 1850?)
KELLING, Amalia, age 29, keeping house, b. Mecklenburg, both parents b. Mecklenburg
Children:
Emilie 8 b. WI
Gustav 6 b. WI
Amalie 4 b. WI
Alfred 1 b. WI
(Max b. 1881)

Since Emilie was born about 1872 in Wisconsin, I know they had to have immigrated before this.

Does Fritz tie into any of the Mecklenburg groups here?
