Hi all, I've just come back from a research trip to Macroom. I've found out lots of useful info for researching irish ancestors. When doing research it is imprtant to remember the naming patterns used by irish families. Eldest son would be named after paternal grandfather eldest daughter after paternal grandmother, 2nd eldest boy after maternal grandfather 2nd daughter after maternal grandmother, next comes paternal g.grandfather; paternal g.grandmother etc this is a particularly strong tradition especially in country areas. Because of this naming pattern there where would be many people with the same first and surnames each person would be given a nickname that would be unique to them this would be what everyone local would call them sometimes it would be there fathers or grandfathers name added to their given name or there name in irish. My grandfather was Aodh in irish Hugh in english and his nickname was gof, my G. Grandfather was Domnhail/ Donal in irish Daniel in english, nickname was Dan Hugh Dan. Please also remember when looking through records that your family may only have been able to read or write in irish, try to learn the irish spelling of the names your are looking for even as recently as 1911 my g. grandfather and g.g grandmother could only read and write in irish only. I hope this helps some people Now I am going to ask for some help, I have viewed the 1911 census for the townland of garranegupple in the parish of Clondrohid Co. Cork. My G. Grandfather was Daniel Kelleher aged 50 born circa 1850 he was widowed his wife was called Johanna (Shea?) he lived with his mother Maire/Mary and three children Hugh, 16 born circa 1895 Michael 15 born circa 1896 and daughter Seile (Julia) Julia I think married someone called Buckley, I don't know what happened to Michael and Hugh is my grandad he had 4 children Donal my father Johanna Joan; Mary Brigid and Michael. Hugh was married to Johanna Riordan who died in 1943 aged 47 born circa 1896 my Grandfather inherited the 80 Acre farm in the Townland, but in the late 1950's Hugh and all his children left Ireland and came to England they never went back. The farm was sold in 1973, after the death of my Grandfather. The family had owned the Farm since at least 1766 when they were mentioned in the religious census; the tithe applotments and Griffiths evaluation. In the census it states that my G.G. Grandmother had 5 children, 4 of which where still alive in 1911. if anyone could link in with these facts I would be very grateful, My G. Grandfather Daniel had also lost a child.
