George Fleming KEITH & Agnes McCOY, VA -> KY children

With many thanks to Larry and to Rhonda, i've been pouring over census data for George Fleming KEITH's family whenever i get the chance.

So far, i've found several interesting tidbits and a possible mystery solved, but the first thing that jumps out is the discrepancy in the reported AGES from decade to decade. It's as if most of the George Fleming KEITH family fell in and out of time warps.

Maybe they were abducted by aliens! ;-O

The main censuses i'm reviewing at present are:
1. 1850 Pendleton County, Kentucky Census, The First District, August 21, 1850

2. 1860 Pendleton County, Kentucky Census, Falmouth Post Office, June 6, 1860

3. 1870 Pendleton County, Kentucky Census, Falmouth Post Office, June 7, 1870

NONE of these 3 censuses show relationships (head-of-household, wife, son, daughter, etc.), so i'm making temporary leaps of faith and trusting i will find validation elsewhere. More than once, however, it is obvious that some of the members in the household are not siblings.

Also, none of the censuses show father George Fleming KEITH's middle name (Fleming), nor Agnes' maiden name McCOY; i add that below to keep George and Agnes identified more clearly.

Lastly, neither John Doniphan Keith nor Charles M. Keith, mentioned elsewhere as the two eldest sons, were part of the household in these censuses, so they must await validation for another day...

*** ***
George (Fleming) KEITH:
~ 1850: age 57, Year of Birth (YOB) would be 1792 or 1793.
~ 1860: age 67, same YOB, no problem.
~ 1870: age 82 (OLDER by about 5 years), YOB would be 1787 or 1788

***
+Agnes (McCOY) Keith:
~ 1850: age 55, YOB = 1794 or 1795
~ 1860: age 65, same YOB, no problem
~ 1870: age 78 (OLDER by about 3 years, YOB = 1791 or 1792

NOTE: Before you make excuses that they were 'getting up there' in years and perhaps just answered incorrectly or that the clerk in THIS year got it wrong...

*** ***
1. Presumed son James M. KEITH:
~ 1850: age 38, YOB = 1811 or 1812
~ 1860: age 44 (YOUNGER by about 4 years), YOB = 1815 or 1816
~ 1870: age 52 (not 58, not 54 – he just keeps getting YOUNGER), YOB = 1817 or 1818

NOTE: per both the 1860 and 1870 censuses, James M. Keith was 'deaf and dumb', (bless his heart), but before you start thinking that led to errors in census communication…

***
2. Presumed daughter Martha KEITH
~ 1850: age 31, YOB = 1818 or 1819
~ 1860: age 36 (YOUNGER by about 5 years), YOB = 1823 or 1824
~ 1870: MIA (not in the same household, perhaps married and/or living apart or deceased).

***
3. Presumed son Anderson D. KEITH
~ 1850: age 27, YOB = 1822 or 1823
~ 1860: age 33 (YOUNGER by about 4 years), YOB = 1826 or 1827
~ 1870: age 44 (might match 1860 depending on the month of his birthday), YOB = 1825 or 1826

***
4. Presumed daughter Elizabeth A. KEITH
~ 1850: age 25, YOB = 1824 or 1825
~ 1860: age 31(YOUNGER by about 4 years), YOB = 1828 or 1829
~ 1870: MIA (perhaps married and/or living apart or deceased)

***
5. Presumed daughter Catherine M. KEITH
~ 1850: age 23, YOB = 1826 or 1827
~ 1860: MIA (perhaps married and/or living apart or deceased)
~ 1870: MIA
NOTE 1: There is a Catherine Keith listed in the SUMMARY (i can't access the details) of the 1880 Magnolia, Larue, Kentucky, census, shown as 'sister' to head of household, birthplace Kentucky, age should be about 53 and is shown as age 59 – about 4 years older – but the way ages flip around in this family, who knows?)
NOTE 2: Somewhere i saw her mentioned as 'Kittie'; i need to go back to look for that.

***
6. Son George Thomas KEITH (based on his death certificate, these were indeed his parents)
~ 1850: age 21, YOB = 1828 *
~ 1860: MIA from household (off somewhere finding and marrying my 2nd GGM and having babies)
~ 1870: now appears to be HEAD of household, age 41 -- w00t!
* NOTE: Since George Thomas KEITH is my 2nd great-grandfather, i've looked ahead on him, and validated all the details Rhonda so generously researched and shared, and the 1900 census shows the actual month and year: March 1928.

***
7. Presumed daughter Charlotte E. KEITH
~ 1850: age 19, YOB = 1830 or 1831
~ 1860: MIA *
~ 1870: age 36 (about 3 years younger), YOB = 1833 or 1834

* NOTE: Where did she go in 1860? Perhaps she was married and/or living apart? But her 1870 name is Keith so either not married or returned to her maiden name or was overlooked in 1860 census or ...?

***
8. Presumed son Henry Clay KEITH
~ 1850: age 18, YOB = 1831 or 1832
~ 1860: MIA *
~ 1870: MIA
* NOTE: There is a Henry C Keith listed in the SUMMARY (i can't access the details) of the 1860 Belle Plaine, Scott, Minnesota census, birthplace Kentucky, age should be about 28 years and is shown as 25 – about 3 years younger – but, again, in this family, that doesn't rule this listing out)

***
9. Presumed son William A. KEITH
~ 1850: age 14, YOB = 1835 or 1836
~ 1860: MIA (perhaps married and/or living apart or deceased)
~ 1870: MIA

***
10. Presumed son Francis E. KEITH
~ 1850: age 12, YOB = 1837 or 1838
~ 1860: age 20 (YOUNGER by about 2 years), YOB = 1839 or 1840
~ 1870: age 31 (not 32, not 30, splitting the difference), YOB = 1838 or 1839

Thus endeth the (near-to-)known children of George Fleming KEITH and Agnes McCOY as far as these 3 censuses can (somewhat) confirm and the bizarre tale of age discrepancies.

But wait! There's more! A potential solution to a mystery: why would a family who already has a daughter named Elizabeth, turn around and name another daughter Eliza?

11. PREVIOUSLY presumed daughter Eliza Z. or Z.E. Keith
~ 1850: MIA
~ 1860: age 24, YOB = 1835 or 1836 (springing fully formed, as if from the head of Zeus, in 1860)
~ 1870: age 31 (YOUNGER by about 3 years and the same age as Francis E), YOB = 1838 or 1839

To be precise, the 1860 census shows 'Eliza' and the 1870 census shows (as it does for all the children) only the initials 'Z.E'.

When i looked ahead to the 1880 Liberty Wells, Indiana Census for my 2nd GGF George Thomas KEITH (listed as #167), i noticed on the same page (at #160) a 42-year-old Frank E. KEITH, who is most likely Frances Edward KEITH – the age is right as is his birthplace (KY) and his parents birthplaces (VA, VA).
AND his WIFE is Elizabeth Z. Keith.

Then, the 1900 Waukomis village, Garfield, Oklahoma Territory Census shows Francis E. KEITH and WIFE Zerilda E. Keith.

So, my theory is that 1850's MIA, 1860's Eliza, 1870's Z.E, 1880's Elizabeth Z (married to F.E.) and 1900's Zerilda E. (married to F.E.) add up to the same person.

There is more, but i think i should make a separate post for EZ/ZE and FE.

Before i forget, in the same George Fleming KEITH household in 1860:
Simeon G. KEITH, age 18 (1841 or 1842), male, occupation Apprentice, born in KY, attended school within the year. (Was he the grandson of George Fleming Keith, perhaps the son of Charles M. Keith?)

That's it for tonight. Sorry for such a long post.
