My great-grandmother was Martha Agnes "Mattie" Keith, born April 01, 1868 in KENTUCKY (city/county unknown). Her father was George T. Keith, and we know little about him. "Mattie" Keith's mother died when Mattie was 18 years old (1886). Mattie's father George T. Keith remarried to a woman named Evelyn, and Mattie and her siblings called her "Aunt Evvie". Mattie disliked her stepmother and said she had to do all the work, cooking and raising her siblings. We know Mattie had a brother named Charles "Charlie" Keith (who married twice; the second time to a woman named Delia, with whom he had at least one child). Mattie also had a sister named Bessie (perhaps Elizabeth?), who had long golden hair and loved to sing, but who died of Dropsy (Kidney ailment - edema) when she (Bessie) was 13 years old. Mattie also had two sets of twins as siblings: Mary and Maxie (who died in infancy) and Alva and Alice. Alva Keith died of sunstroke in Kansas City after brother Charlie married Delia; Alice Keith married Will Tinsley and had at least three children (William Tinsley, Clarence Tinsley and another boy). These were all children of George T. Keith and his first wife, Mattie's mother. His second wife Evelyn also may have had children, either before or after she married George T. At some point, Mattie moved to Texas, though whether it was with her family or not is unknown. By June 18, 1896, at the age of 21, Mattie became the Postmistress of the Saginaw post office in Tarrant County, TX. She worked as Postmistress until April 23, 1893 (she was 25 years old then). Information about Mattie's commission as a Postmistress can be confirmed here: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txpost/tarrant.html On June 18, 1896, at age 28, Mattie married William "Will" Easter Gallaspy. (i also just posted an inquiry on this thread: http://genforum.genealogy.com/keith/messages/2446.html but since the thread was dated 2000, my inquiry is on page 15, and i hoped perhaps someone currently posting might also have information. Thanks. Notify Administrator about this message?
