KEITH - HUMPHREY, N.B., Canada 1796-1873
Posted by: Doug Eastman Date: November 03, 2000 at 11:03:18
  of 8453

Margaret HUMPHREY, was the daughter of William HUMPHREY and Nancy PEATMAN (PITMAN/PITTMAN?) of the USA. Wm and Nancy were likely born in the U.S.A. about 1760 and died in New Brunswick, Canada sometime aft. 1802

SARAH2 MULLIN (JACOB1) was born 1833, and died 1870. She married HENRY KEITH, son of DANIEL KEITH and ELIZABETH DISBROW (DESEBORO?). Henry KEITH was born 1796, and died 1873. Source: The book, "NEW CANAAN EARLY SETTLERS....THE ANCESTORS OF OUR COMMUNITY AND CHURCH AND REMINISCENCES" by J. BLOIS COREY, 1992.

Sarah was the first wife of Henry KEITH. She was the daughter of Jacob MULLIN (mother unknown). Sarah had a brother, John MULLIN. (no vitals)

On December 21, 1820, Henry KEITH married (2) Margaret HUMPHREY (b. 1794 - d. September 29, 1851). Margaret HUMPHREY was probably born in the USA. (Rhode Island or PA?) She died in New Canaan, Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada. Margaret and Henry KEITH had at least two children, Naomi and Nancy. Nancy KEITH was born in 1821 probably in New Canaan, New Brunswick, Canada

It is the ancestors and siblings of Margaret HUMPHREY that I am trying to trace. If you know of any connection between the KEITH & HUMPHREY / MULLIN name above that leads to family history info. Or vitals on Margaret HUMPHREY, please contact me. Thanks.

The following research notes may be of interest to New Brunswick "KEITH" family:
"The Story of Sussex & Vicinty, New Brunswick" by Grace AITON, published by King's County Historical Society, 1967.
i.e.:
When James, a younger brother of Daniel KEITH, a settler in the New Canaan area of Queen's County, made a scouting trip over the county line into Sussex parish in the early 1800's he discovered a ridge wooded with butternut trees, and decided to settle on it. The settlement which he founded had retained, unitl very recently, the post office name of Butternut Ridge, although the community itself has become known as Havelock. Daniel KEITH was one of a large group of settlers who came up the St. John River, Washademoak Lake and the samll stream which flows into it to settle on intervale land which (was then named?) New Canaan. The first group to come was George Webb PRICE, son of pre-loyalist, Edmund PRICE, who had settled on the Long reach in the 1760's. He had heard of rich farming land which had not been granted, and, guided by an Indian, he made a tour of investigation and found a desirable tract of intenanted land. Late in the fall of 1793, accompanied by his wife, Rachel FORD, their three small children, one an infant in arms, and Seth O'BRIEN, he returned by river, lake and stream, with winter upon them as they reached the crude shelter he had prepared for their home.

Others soon followed. Among them was Daniel KEITH, Irish born, who had served in the Queen's rangers, married Sarah DISBORough and settled along the St. John River. A letter to Edward WINSLOW in 1802 "conveyed 10,000 thanks for former serices" and asked him to submit their memorial and survey of their lots to the govenor and council that survey might be allowed to stand as it was then, was signed by 18 persons - Seth BRYANT, Daniel KEITH, George PRICE, Gideon COREY, John MATHERS, Henry KITCHEN, Oswald ALLWARD, Benjamin ALLWARD, George MORISON, Edmond PRICE, Michael THORN, William HUMPHREY, Richard Thorn, John PRICE, George KEITH, John F PRICE, John HUMPHREY and John KEITH.

"The Descendants of Daniel and Elizabeth(Disbrow) Keith was published in 1981. The last copy was sold in 1998. The book is, therefore, no longer available.
However, I still have the camera ready copy from which the book was printed and I can have a copy made for you. What you would get is approximately 275 unbound sheets of paper, printed on both sides(about 550 pages). You could then have the book bound for yourself or have it punched for storing in a 3 ring binder.
The cost of copying, mailing, etc, comes to $Can 31.00 per copy mailed to Canadian addresses or $US 25.00 per copy if mailed to US addresses. More than one copy ordered at the same time for delivery to the same address would cost less. Ask for a specific quotation. If you want a copy please send me a cheque for the appropriate amount and I will have a copy made for you.
