I just thought I would post and hope for some extra information from someone. My husband has an ancestor George K Cooke/Cook b 1792 Caroline County, Virginia VA who married a Sarah/Sally/Sallie Hampton b Kentucky(haven't found marriage yet) George Keesee Cooke 's name I confirmed from seeing a Land purchase Licence for 40 acres he purchased in Wabash County in Indiana in 1837. From Indiana Pioneer Book info he was a Justice of the Peace, lived near town America in LIberty Township, Wabash Co and was a possible post master. Neighbour Jesse D Scott married daughter Dorcus to James Calaway in Wabash Co, INdiana in 1845.. In the 1840 census Geo K Cooke was the Deputy Marshal possibly for the whole of Wabash Co, but definitely for Liberty Township according to the pages of the 1840 census schedule. In this census 1840 he had more children under his roof than we know of. We know his wife was Sarah aka Sally, Sallie and her surname is Hampton from family folk lore. Don't know her family. We know he enlisted for the 1812 war as George K Cooke age 21 born Caroline County, VA, Blacksmith enlisting in Knoxville, Tennesee. He was a War of 1812 veteran born on Jan 5, 1792. Dischgarged 1815 in Baton Rouge,New Orleans, Louisiana fought under General Jackson. Where did he marry ? Did he know Sarah Hampton before he enlisted ? How did she get to New Orleans from birth in KY, and give birth to Matilda in 1816 ? Matilda Cooke married Richard Henry Dicken in 1836 Fayette County, Indiana George K or Geo K and his family lived in Wabash County as early as 1830(I actually think he was in Kentucky or Ohio in 1830 but haven't proven it), and he died in 1866 Indiana (haven't proven). His wife's name was Sally. He had sons George K b abt 1852 Indiana, John B 1833, Payton 1831 b OH or KY, William b.? and Gabriel 1835, and daughters Matilda b.1816 Baton Rouge Louisiana(DICKEN), Dorcus Jones Cooke b 1826 KY(James CALAWAY), Jusetta 1837 INdiana, Louisa, Mary (MCNIEL), and Martha. So, why was he given the middle name Keesee - is it related to his ancestors. Who were his parents? When did they leave VA and get to Tennessee so he could enlist in 1812. Later census and family record the name as Cook. Thanks, Heather Witmore Notify Administrator about this message?
