Hi. The information I have indicates that Newton Keene's mother was Elizabeth Newton. This would seem to make sense given his first name. I believe Elizabeth Ball was his father's first wife.

FYI- Not sure how these message boards work. I posted the following info earlier in response to Michael Groshong's posting.

I might be able to clear up some of the confusion (or add even more?. I have always understood Newton Keene's parents to be William Keene (III) and Elizabeth Newton. This would seem to make sense as this would appear to be where the Newton name originates. Newton Keene's grandfather (William II) had a sister named Sarah. She married John Woodbridge. Assuming this to be correct, this John Woodbridge would have been Newton's great-uncle. Sarah and John Woodbridge had a son also named John. This may be the John Woodbridge that Newton claims to be the Heir at Law of. And when Newton references “his mother, Sarah” he may actually be talking about the younger John’s mother, not his own. This also fits with Sarah being the sister of William Keene- Newton’s grandfather. My research here started with a webpage talking about the graves of the original William Keene and his wife Elizabeth Rogers (after being widowed she married Thomas Banks). These people were Newton's great grandparents.-

The info on the Keenes is a little over half way down the page. It also talks about the marraiages of their daughters. One of the references is to one of the daughters (other info indicates it was her daughter Sarah) who married John Woodbridge.

Hope this information helps. Now for some possible confusion. You indicate you are descended from Newton’s daughter Mary and her marriage to John Miller. My records indicate I am also descended from Mary, however I have no record of John. My 3 Greats Grandmother was Hannah Butler Ashton. Her parents were Burdett Ashton and Mary Keene (Burdett’s 3rd wife). Mary is listed as the daughter of Newton Keene and Sarah Edwards. There are numerous genealogies of the Ashton family that confirm this. In addition, Hannah’s older brother is named John Newton Ashton. I show that Burdett died in 1814, which would seem to indicate that Mary could not have been widowed. That means for her to have married John Miller, she and Burdett must have divorced. This would have been unusual for the day but certainly possible. Do you have any info on this?

Hope this helps.

Bill
