We will probably never find official records of Tabitha’s maiden name but we have found some evidence of who she may have been. The earliest record we can find of Curtis is 1736 in Henrico County.Curtis was levied for 208 acres and the Q-rent was paid by Mary Keats (apparently his mother). This is also probably about the time he married Tabitha.
Thomas Cheatham, Jr. had land adjoining Curtis and was levied for 447 acres. We think this may have been Tabitha's brother but will probably never be able to prove it.
Thomas Cheatham, Sr. married Tabitha Branch (widow of Benjamin Branch) 21 Feb 1706 and in his will dated 2 May 1720 and probated 1 Aug 1726 he mentions sons Thomas, Jonathan, Marmaduke, and Benjamin and daughters Mary, Susanna, and Tabytha.Could this be our Tabitha?
1 Mar 1743 – John Folks acquires land adjoining Curtis Keatts and Thomas Cheatham.
20 Dec 1746 – Frances Cheatham sold 200a to Benjamin Cheatham land adjoining Curtis Keatts and John Folks.
6 Sept 1751 Curtis Keatts and Tabitha of Amelia County sold to Thomas Cheatham, Jr. of Chesterfield County 400 acres in Chesterfield County on the south side of Swift Brook.
This is just speculation but so far it is the strongest evidence available.
