Bartholomew Carmody was born in Ardah co, Limerick circa 1834 and arrived in Australia probably after circa 1858. There is a Barthol Carmody aged 30 arriving on the ship Lillies into Port Philip in December 1861 which could be a possibility as there was also Pat Kearney aged 30 on this ship also. Johanna Kearney does indeed show as his mothers name on his death certificate but no information re fathers name. Nor do either parents names appear on his marriage certificate. I do not know if Johanna married a Carmody - if she came to Australia also or if perhaps Bartholomew just took the surname Carmody. Without a manifest showing his entry into this country I cannot continue with the search. I have had trouble finding a few imigration documents of ancestors but have been saved by other data and certificates so as to continue on in most cases. Bartholomew married Bridget Doorley in Brisbane in 1863 and moved to Toowoomba where he was a warden/turnkey at the gaol there and here too I have hit a snag as I can find nothing to confirm this other than a fellow researcher stating he was on the same pay sheet in 1867 as his relative who also worked there. It was thought he had brothers by the name of Pat and Tom but as yet I have not confirmed this either. There was a Thomas Carmody who was a warden at the gaol but whether he is related or not is unknown at this time. Bartholomew is buried at Toowoomba and Drayton cemetery. I have not traced his children other than my grandfather and perhaps one other son. All the grandchildren have now passed on and as Bartholomew died aged 54 and my grandfather died aged 59 with both their children being quite young at their deaths, little information was passed on to the next generation by both. Bartholomew's wife Bridget I think arrived on the 'Parsee" into Morton Bay on 9.2.1857 but although I have the immigration papers I have no way as yet to confirm if this was indeed her or my great great grandparents (named)as again they are not referred to in any other documents. It has be quite frustrating trying to find information to allow me to confirm the arrival of Bartholomew or find any relatives now living who may have further information. I did place an article in the Toowoomba Chronicle but to no avail and I also wrote to every Carmody in Toowoomba and surrounding areas again with no result. Bridget did move to Brisbane towards the end of the 1800's so perhaps they spread out from there. Any help you can offer will be appreciated as I would love to follow the tree further.
