Hi Chris,
I have a 3x great grandfather who is John Kearney. I found his declaration that was made in 1847. In this document he tells where he was born and when. He needed to make this document so he could be a legal US citizen. This is what you need to gather more information about James Kearney and his wife. I recommend that you find a local NARA, National Archives in your area...or the area that they finally settled in.
Also, email, write or call the vital records office in Fayette, Kentucky and ask them what type of documents they have for immigrants. Most likely if he immigrated in 1854, they were legally responsible to declare themselves as US citizens before the court. Now keep in mind that they may have deliberately lied to the court as Irish folks were nervous of lawyers. There may be slight inconstancies such as year of birth and other silly things. Considering the date of immigration, there may be a ships list that can tell you what ship they were on. NARA might have this information as well.
Nara's website is: http://www.archives.gov/http://www.archives.gov/
You are very luck to know James Kearney's parents names. You may be able to find them on a Griffith's valuation once you know where they came from in Ireland.
I just found this site...but I am sure you know all about it.

I guess the bottom line is that you need this type of document to help you find out where they came from in Ireland.
You could do a Griffith's valuation online to see if any of the surnames match a certain location, but that could be time consuming.

This is a great site. They have the scanned image and list the land lord and they have maps.
Do a family family name search. There are many Kearney's from all over Ireland, soI would go with Trainor/Traynor or Crilby. That way you can see if there are any Trainor/Traynor families in the same area as Kearney families.
Let us know what you find! Please post it on this site so we all can read about your Kearney roots.
Also, post the same query on the Kearney and Carney boards on Roots Web. Lots of people that are much more knowledgeable than I am will be happy to help you!
The link for the Kearney message board is:

There is also a Kearney mailing list, the link is:
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/k/kearney.html#KEARNEYhttp://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/k/kearney.html#KEARNEY
and for the Carney Mailing list is:
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/c/carney.html#CARNEYhttp://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/c/carney.html#CARNEY
Kearney and Carney are interchangeable so it is important to look up both names. Subscribe to both of these mailing lists. I do and that way I am always aware of who is looking for Kearney roots.
Once you know where in Ireland they came from, you will be able to post your information on Roots Web and on genealogy.com and other people may have ties to your family.
Hope to have helped you!
Good Luck, Liz
