James Kearley (7 Feb. 1818 - 3 Nov. 1900) was the son of Josiah Kearley and Sarah Cannon (ca. 1793-aft. 1860). Sarah Cannon Kearley was the daughter of John Cannon (d. 1807 Sumter County SC) and Gemima Broughton (ca. 1765 SC - 23 July 1854). Gemima Broughton was the daughter of Edward Broughton and Elizabeth Ragan(?) of Clarendon/Claremont County SC. Sarah Cannon Kearley arrived in Monroe County, AL with a party of settlers from SC in Jan. or Feb. of 1817. Also in this party of settlers was Sarah Cannon Kearley's brother, Nathaniel Cannon, and her uncle, Nathaniel Broughton. Gemima Broughton Cannon married a Mr. Runnels after the death of John Cannon and had at least one child, Nancy, by him. I do not know if Gemima Broughton Cannon Runnels was with the settlers that came in 1816/17, but she was in Monroe County, AL by the 1830 census. I have information (not personally substantiated by me) that Ellen Rikard (5 Dec. 1828 - 23 Oct. 1903) was the daughter of Jacob Rikard and Polly Johnson. Both James and Ellen Rikard Kearley are buried in Buena Vista Cemetery in north Monroe County as is James' twin brother, Joshua Kearley and his wife Amanda Rikard Kearley (sister of Ellen Rikard). You might find the following items on my website to be of interest: Will of John Cannon; Deed of gift from Gemima Runnels to daughters Nancy Runnels and/or Flora Nettles and Sally Kearley; Court Case of John B. Lorez vs. Nathaniel Broughton and Christopher Coullette. The URL for this site is

Hope this helps
