Ken,

Via Y-DNA testing, a group of fellow KAYS researchers is exploring whether the George Kays (m. Mary (Polly) Huffman) line can in fact be connected to George Kays who married Letty Hamilton. While the testing is not yet complete, a comparison of (i) Y-DNA testing for two known male descendants of our Kays/Huffman line with (ii) a very recent Y-DNA test by a direct descendant of the Kays/Hamilton line (based thus far on 37 markers), suggests our George, who married Mary (Polly) Huffman,is NOT closely related to the George Kays who married Letty Hamilton.

In fact, the 67 marker testing from our Kays/Huffman lines revealed a haplogroup of G2, while the test results just received from a Kays/Hamilton descendant reflect a haplogroup of I1a -- i.e. an entirely different "branch" of the genetic "tree." The I1a haplogroup is believed to have originated in Northern France, and is said to be found most frequently today in the Viking/Scandinavian populations of Northwest Europe. By contrast, the G2 haplogroup is believed to have originated in India or Pakistan, and is today found predominantly throughout Europe and the Middle East.

You may also be interested to know that, based on the testing of the KAYS/HUFFMAN descendants, very close matches exist with folks of the names KEY and KAY of Lancashire and Yorkshire in Northwest England, and with various individuals who reside in Ireland. Based on our DNA testing, it seems that those of us who descend from George KAYS/Mary (Polly) HUFFMAN are also somehow distantly related to Robert KAY, b. ca 1725 King George County, Virginia, d. 1808 South Carolina; a John KEY, born in England about 1630, died in Virginia; and a George Washington KEY who was born about 1820 in Philadephia, Pennsylvania. I would be thrilled to hear from anyone who could help ascertain the connections between our KAYS(Huffman) line and these individuals.

Additionally, it would be very helpful to find another KAYS descendant of George/Letty to confirm more conclusively the information revealed by our initial testing of a KAYS/HAMILTON descendant, and would also be intriguing to test descendants of Charles KAYS/CAYS and Betsy Clark to determine whether they are close cousins. We need males who are direct descendants along paternal lines of either George Kays/Letty Hamilton or Charles Kays (Cays)/Betsy Clark.

Best wishes to all with their research!

Tanya Curtis
