I believe there is only ONE Eleven Merrit Kays. In 1860 the census of washington county showed John and Anne and George and Sarah Kays. (Sarah Colvin) John and George are apparently brothers, at the least obviously neighbors, and may have lived in a divided house. Census takers were instructed to count whoever was in the house. I believe Eleven Merrit Kays was counted twice. They didnt require 'legal names.' Ancestry.com has a death certificate listed as ELWIN KAYS however no other records exist for an elwin kays. If you look at the cursive strokes, its eleven m kays, parents George and NANCY Colvin. Nancy was Sarah Colvins sister, and John Kays was the informant to the info. Obviously they recorded the wrong sister, as 1870 Census and KY Birth index have S A Colvin and Sara Colvin as mother. No other records of John Kays having a merit can be found.
