A biography/family history of John Mathew Kay is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3. His father, James Kay, was born

John M. Kay was born in a tent on the trail southwest of Dillon, MT, 21 May 1867, the son of James and Mary (Hope) Kay. John's father, James Kay, was born in Scotland and died in Dec 1913, age 86; Mary Hope Kay was born in England and died in 1909, age 79. They were married in England and after the birth of three children, immigrated to the US. During the voyage their children died of scarlet fever and were buried at sea. The parents landed at New York City and stayed there for a time before they moved to Schuykill, PA, where James was a carpenter and cabinetmaker. Later they moved to Missouri, Colorado, Utah, and Montana.

John Mathew Kay graduated from Bozeman (MT) High School and Montana State Agricultural College, Helena Business College, and graduated from Highland Park College in Des Moines, IA, in 1902. At age 17, he began a teaching career, teaching in rural schools for some years, then becoming principal of the East Side schools in Bozeman, MT, for four years; superintendent of Red Lodge City Schools for eight years; 1892-93, supt. of schools in Gallatin County; principal of Broadwater County High School for eight years. John established an undertaking business in Havre, MT, in 1913. IN 1918, he was elected coroner of Hill County, MT.

On 26 Jul 1891, John married Miss Clara Lelia Murray, daughter of C.P. and Elizabeth (Ridgway) Murray. The Murrays were Montana pioneers having come to Montana in 1864, first to Diamond City and later to Hunter's Hot Springs, MT, and Mr. Murray became a prosperous pioneer ranchman of Yellowstone County, MT. Kay children: Edna (Mrs. Merle E. Smith); Vevah; John M., Perry M.; Kenneth L.; Dorothy. (Brief biographies of sons, John M. and Perry M. Kay, are included)

Clara L. Kay died 6 Feb 1924, Great Falls, MT
John M. Kay died 7 Dec 1932, age 65
