The George Kaufmann/Coffman to which she referred was born about 1762, married about 1789, had children born or christened between 1790 and 1803 in Frederick, Maryland, then moved to Randolph Co., Virginia where he had additional children, perhaps as late as 1815. I believe he and his wife later were in Randolph Co. and then probably in Harrison Co., Va on land that likely became southwestern Taylor Co., Va, probably the latter near the town of (at one time county seat of) Pruntytown, West Virginia. Your George appears to be too late. This George almost certain was a child of a Johannes Kaufmann who lived for an extended period in Frederick Co., Maryland but likely lived in Pennsylvania (perhaps Lancaster Co.) prior to going to Maryland. It is not unlikely that Johannes Kaufmann had numerous siblings who were in Maryland before they went down the Shenandoah and into Kentucky, but the latter has not been proven. The use of the spelling Kaufmann for this George was a Lutheran minister's opinion of the correct spelling and in fact the family had probably adopted variations on Coffman, Caughman, Caugman by the time they were living in Maryland.

Several of us are still looking for Johannes' ancestors. There are some strong suggestions in church records in Frederick that Johannes was the father of at least some of George Coffman's siblings.
