According to the research I have done the family name is Christian and more specifically Roman Catholic.I was able to confirm this during a trip to Germany in the mid 90's.Through a friend of my father (Who lived in Berlin)we were made aware of a Rudolf Katzenberger who was the owner of the restaurant Katzenberger's Adler in Rastatt, just north of the black forest (45 minutes south of Heidelberg via the autobahn).I tracked down Rudolf who was in in his late 70's (and looked strikingly like my father) and was living in a small village outside of Rastatt called Kuppenheim.Rudolf was able to tell me the origins of the family stretching back to the late 900's to early 1000's in the Innsbruk Austria area (a construction firm by the name of "Katzenberger" can be seen from the Autobahn). One of Rudolf's family heirlooms (which hangs in his living room) is a cross from the Catholic church in the village from which they emigrated from Austria to Germany.Based on this information I am convinced that the family name is christian and not Jewish.Rudolf also was able to identify the branch of the family (Georg Katzenberger) that imigrated to the USA in the early 1800's. Entering in the port of Baltimore, moving to Chilicothe, Ohio (there was actually a Katzenberger who was mayor of nearby Cincinnati, ohio). Eventually some Katzenbergers returned to Baltimore, a branch went to Boston, and now some of us are in Pennsylvania. To the best of my knowledge all have been Roman Catholic with the branch in Baltimore having some nuns and priests.
