Fort Worth, Texas
Does anyone know the names of the Katz family that lived on E. Bluff St. in Fort Worth, Texas. They ran a shop in the back of their home that produced some of the most beautiful satin feather comforters. They also made feather pillows out of the satin.Plus the usual feather mattresses and pillows.
I did not know Mr. Katz.He had passed away before we moved there. It must not have been too long before we moved there, because Mrs. Katz was wearing a black arm band when we moved there. And, she wore it for a long time after.
I doremember she had two grown children.I want to say they were both lawyers. They were both very nice to us.But, I remember how beautiful I always thought the daughter was with her vibrant red hair.
I was a little girl in the 1950's and Mrs. Katz had been my grandparents landlady for some time. She owned several houses up and down that street, and rented out appartments in them.My parents rented from her on a couple of occasions.
Mrs. Katz was a small framed, short lady.I remember her going up and down the street to check on her tenants. She was always very busy. She kept her hair up in a bun. And, she was always wearing a bibbed apron. You could tell her hair use to be red because it was grey with lots of whisps of red highlights. She was strict and did not take any foolishness from any of us kids. But, she still had a very tender heart. My grandmother went blind from glocoma while renting from her.Mrs. Katz was always checking on Grandma and bringing her food, because my Grandpa worked long hours 7 days a week.
Two special things I remember about her is her Jewish food she brought us on occasion (I was too young to even think about asking the names of the dishes)...and, a little dress she made for me.
We were really poor. There was a special occasion coming up at school. It was a very special occasion where I had to be very dressy.Mother and Daddy could not afford to buy me a dress. So, Mrs. Katz surprised me with the most beautiful sky blue satin dress made from her quilt scraps, and she sewed a little white fur collar on it.I'll never forget that dress.I felt like a princess in it.
Once, she even gave me a little sack of small quilt scrap pieces.I couldn't sew well, at all. But, at the time, I was trying to make doll clothes with a needle and thread. To me, it looked like a sack of jewels, with all the different colors of satin.
I know Mrs. Katz is gone by now. But, I would love to know a little history on her.I think she was not born in the US. And, I would love to have a nice picture of her to put in my scrapbook.
Thank you,
Shirley
