I know Joseph W. KATES had a brother but had no idea what his name was. Believe he, also, had a sister (might be Elizabeth). He, apparently, was somewhat of a "tyrant" to his children and my Grandmother knew she was not one of his favorites. He was a telegrapher in the early days of the telegraph and was in Philadelphia for a long time and moved to Richmond after 1874. He was the telegrapher for Gen'l Beauregard during the Civil War and, apparently, very good at it. One of this grandsons, George Russell KATES, wrote about his work during the CW. He is buried in the family plot in Hollywood Cemetary, in Richmond. The info I have on the KATES name came from a genealogical research done some years ago. Don't know who had it done. I have no contact with anyone in the Kates family. Wish I could help you.
