Kates Family Genealogy Forum

My ggrandfather's middle name was Whitfield. The genealogical research didn't really help me much. I haven't tried to follow-up on the KATES name other than on the internet. Wonder where the Whitfield name came into the family? The surname is seen most often as CATES rather than KATES. My Joseph W. Kates was from Wilmington, Delaware. The following is a bit of what I have:"The first of the family to come to America was John CATTS, KATES, OR CATES, who was a passenger for Virginia in the ship SAFETY, which sailed from England in 1635. There was, ao a "Joseph CATES", aged 17, amount the passengers in the ship ASSURANCE DE LO, bound for VA in 1635. There is a family tradition to the effect that the immigrant, John, settled for a time in the South, then removed to Windham, Conn., where he was living before 1686 but no definite evidence substantiating his residence in the South is available. Lt. John Cates or Kates (spelled both ways in the New England records), of Windham, Conn., is said to have been an officer under Cromwell. His will is dated 1697." Also, sometime before 1745 a Joseph CATES came from Greenwich, England, to American and settled at Gorham Me. There are a number of the Cates, Kates and Cate families listed in what I have, along with their wives and children's names. Many fought in the Revolution. They were in New Hampshire, Conn., Mass, & Vermont. They, also listed the following names separately as being prominent: (1) Eliza Jane CATE (1812-1884)New Hampshire. (2) George W. CATE-
(b.1824)Vermont. (3) Geo.Washington CATE (b.1834). (4)Wm. Henderson CATE (1839-1899) Tennessee & Ohio. (5) Charles Theodore CATES (b.1863)Tennessee. (6) Junius Sidney CATES (b.1877).North Carolina & VA. (7) Louis Shattuck CATES (b.1881), Mass. & NY. (8) Bert Clarence CATE, (1887), NY. My ggrandfather KATES married Hannah Eliz. REMSEN in NY. She was a descendant of the NY Dutch (Van Wyck > Swartwout > Remsen. The first Remsen to come to NY changed his name from Vanderbeek to Remsen, which means son of Rem. Hope this will give you a start on your search.
