I am hoping to learn more about some of the Kate/Cates/Cate families in Franklin County, Maine. Have been researching Jonathan Cates, who was born about 1801, probably in Barrington, NH and died in Hallowell, Maine 15 Sep 1850. He is buried in the Cates/Cunningham Cemetery in Strong, Maine. He married Sarah/Sally Foss in Strafford, NH on 11 Nov 1824. She was born about 1809, perhaps in Embden, Maine, and died 9 June 1847. They were living in Concord, Maine in 1840. They had Levi Alvin Cates, born about 1825, died 26 June 1872 in Freeport, Maine... married 1st - Harriet Dunham, married 2nd - Ellen Augusta Reed... John Henry Cates, born about 1833... Hannah Cates, born about 1837...and Charles David Cates (of Franklin County & Lewiston, Maine)born about 1844, died about 1890 - m1 - Mary E. Puffer; m2 - Rubie A. Hunt; m3 - Henrietta "Jennie" Wilson. In the 1880 census of Lewiston and in some of the City Directories the spelling was Kates.
It appears that Jonathan and Sally also had Freeman L. Cates, born 1 May 1843, Strong, Maine and died 23 Nov 1921, Wilton, Maine. He married 8 March 1866 in Avon, Maine to Sarah Walker, who was previously married to Nathan Grover Kennedy. In the 1850 ensus, Freeman L. Cates, age 6, was living with the Caleb Butterfield family in Farmington, Maine, along with his 3 year old sister, Sarah Cates, born about 18 May 1847 in Strong and died in Wilton on 22 April 1935. She married Harrison Merchant about 1861, probably in Weld, Maine. Information about their parents in somewhat vague on their death records, but they weren't the ones supplying the information. Freeman's marriage record states that his mother was Sarah and she was born in Eden, Maine (perhaps Embden mispelled) and that his father was born in Hallowell, Maine (Jonathan DIED in Hallowell) Anyway, it is a tenuous link, so I am hoping to find something more substantial.

I had thought that Artemas Gardner Cates (1844-1920) and Stephen Decatur Cates (1842-1922), who are both buried in Strong Village Cemetery might also be of this family... but it looks like they may be sons of Seth Adoniram Cates & Sally Nevins Cushman, who were married in Avon, Maine on 15 Sept 1834. The History of Farmington states that they had 3 children. Henry S. Cates, born about 1838, was living in Phillips, Maine in 1850, with his uncle Jonathan Cushman. Have not found A.Gardner Cates or S.Decatur Cates or their parents in the census yet, but the Cushman Genealogy states that Sally & Adniram lived in New York City.

I have quite a bit of info on these families that I would be happy to share.
