Mr. Brown (and all others who are interested about the Kates name),
The Kates family that decends from William Thorpe Kates is slated to have the annual family reunion at the Moose Lodge on June 9th, starting around noon and lasting till ???
You bring your own food, memories, pictures, etc. To the best of my knowledge there isn't any charge to attend, but I do think they have some drawings to help defray the costs.
There's an open invitation. If any would like to attend, please let me know so I can pass it on to the planners.
Mr Great Grandfather's name was William Thorpe Kates (b1842-d.1927). Some thought his middle name was Thomas. His nickname was Billy. He was married to Selena Moore (b.1853-d1938) and had a bunch of kids all of whom have made the transition.
He was the son of John Kates and Catherine Kimble Kates. There is some thought that he had two sisters, Amanda and Sarah. Might have had more siblings, but not certain.
In our folklore, we have been told that an ancestor married an Indian and was ostracized by both families. I have heard the tribe was Cherokee, but again I have found no hard evidence.
Hope this has been some help.
