This message and several others often beg precisely this question. My research thus far has suggested that the various Kates families of Southern New Jersey (Salem. Burlington and Gloucester Counties) may be related to those in Delaware. Apparently theremay have been a rift in the family at some point, based on the controversy caused by a male family member marrying an Indian. Most of the family segments seem to go back to Philadelphia, and farther back to Canada and/or England. The one about whom I seek information is William Kates. I do not have his middle initial. He lived in the NJ/DE area but traveled regularly by train to Ohio, suggesting that he had relatives there. He passed away around 1900 or not too long after, was happily married and had at least one child, a daughter born in 1896. If the families are related he was probably a cousin of William T., who lived longer as was not known as William; and also of William M. who also lived until about 1930 or 31. We know William M.(son of Wm. H.) was born in Ohio, and was the child of William H. (born 1821) in Salem Co. NJ. Some of the Kates'es trace back to Martin Kates (born 1813) also in NJ. Perhaps we can all figure out if Martin and William H. share some ancestry. For what it's worth, there was a post asking how Caroline Kates got from NJ to IA. She is the sister of William C., son of Martin Kates from NJ. Interestingly, decendents of Wm. H. (b. 1821) followed a westward route that went to Iowa. Wm. H. was born in 1821 in NJ, married in OH, and was father of Wm. Miller K. who died in 1931 in Iowa. This all coud be co-incidence, but for two unrelated famileis to start in the same place, all end up in a very small area in NJ, and then end up in OH and IA is unlikely, especially at a time when people traveled and move less than they do today. Back then a move of that distance meant that one stood a chance of never going home again, and such moves were often made in the footsteps of other family members. Any thoughts? Who is that other "William" mentioned above? ...Sam Brown Notify Administrator about this message?
