Was checking the KATES Genforum. My ggrandfather, Joseph Whitfield KATES, was raised in Wilmington, Delaware. I have no information on his parents or siblings. No amount of searching on the internet has helped. My paternal grandmother was one of his children. I vaguely remember hearing her talk about the family but I simply don't remember any names. I have pictures of Mr. Kates and a history of his work as a telegrapher during the Civil War and prior to the CW, and names of his children. His wife was Hannah Elizabeth REMSEN, from NY. She brought was descended from the early Dutch settlers in NY. Have been in touch with different Kates people but none seem to be "attached". Your posting is the first one I have run into regarding Delaware. Great-grandfater Kates died in Richmond, VA in 1908, and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
