I think this is a different Walter Karrick from the one that's been mentioned here before.. but if anyone recognizes any of this info.. please let me know. Don

Walter Karrick was born between 1770-1775 in Charles Co., Maryland. He was the son of Walter (b. 1734 MD - d. 1803 KY) and Nancy (Thomas) Karrick (b. 17__ MD - d. c1813 KY) of Charles Co., Md. Walter and Nancy apparently married in Maryland around 1770 and later moved to Fayette Co., Ky. where they settled with their children. Walter apparently had several siblings, including Hugh, Edward, Robert, and Benedict Karrick.

Walter was living in Fayette Co., Ky. in 1800. He married Rutha Pickett, daughter of his neighbor, around 1803 in Fayette Co., Ky. Rutha was born around 1788 in Virginia, the daughter of John (b. 1740 VA - d. 1841-1850 KY) and Rachel (Carr) Pickett.

He and Rutha bought 13 acres on Boffman's Fork in Fayette Co., Ky. from Joseph Allen on 2 May 1810. He sold five acres and 139 poles to Gideon Woods on 6 March 1812 and eight acres to John C. & Mary Rose on 10 April 1813.

Walter shows up on tax lists in Clark County in 1812, which show he had a tavern license as early as 1813 and operated a tavern on the Irvin-Winchester Road at Log Lick at Vienna. He probably also operated a ferry on the Red River near his tavern.

He was indicted in March 1823 for forging a 25-cent note. He and John W. Broughton were brought up on state felony charges in September 1823. The nature of the charges has not been found, but they were found not guilty. In March 1824, he was indicted three times for bootlegging and selling whiskey after hours without a license.

Walter apparently died in either late 1824 or early 1825. Records at the Kentucky Historical Society say he died in 1823, but court records show that he was at least alive in March 1824. His name appears on tax lists for Clark Co., Ky. in 1824 and 1825, but only Rutha's name appears in 1826. Rutha was executor of his estate and according to an inventory on file in Clark County, Walter had a will, but it was never recorded at the courthouse.

Rutha married Walter's longtime friend, John Weldon Broughton, on 7 April 1829 in Clark Co., Ky. They apparently had at least one daughter together, but her name is not known. John W. died in 1847. Rutha then went to live with her son, Samuel, and apparently died in the 1860s.
