My best guess would be to start with census records or old phone directories for the area your family lived. Do you know the names of your Grandpa's parents?
If you are still in the metro Detroit area, I would suggest a visit to the Burton Historical Collection at the Detroit Public Library on Woodward Ave. They have many resources.
