Kern
The family name Kern in German means nuclear, core, crux, center, or heart. 32 The majority of the data concerning the Karns Family (formerly named Kern) was derived from a document titled "The Karns Families" 27 researched and written by Donald Porter Karns 916 Maryland Ave., Pittsburgh 32, Pennsylvania, June 15, 1957. Donald Porter Karns gave a copy of "The Karns Families" to his cousin Marion (Karns) Slaughenhoupt. This document later became the possession of Marion Eleanor (Slaughenhoupt) Yingling, the eldest daughter of Marion (Karns) Slaughenhoupt who in turn provided "The Karns Families" document as input to this.

THE KARNS FAMILIES
It has been said that a man who begins his family record with a brief mention of his parents, and better still, if he begins with his grandparents, gives evidence of a forethought which will entitle him to the lasting gratitude of his children and grand children.

Few are capable of estimating properly the value of such a record until they themselves have been relegated back into the ranks of grand parents or great grand parents, and then it is forever too late to collate from the hazy mists of the past the items which would make up even the semblence of such a record. And yet there are times in the life of almost every one when but a cursory glimpse at such a collation would be esteemed a grateful priviledge.

A recognition of this commendable sentiment in many of the numerous descendants of a worthy and honorable ancestor, the courageous persistent pioneer, CHRISTIAN KERN, who we can refer as our common ancestor. Conscious that the record in its completed form it is still incomplete, and in its incompleteness may enbody imperfections, it is submitted to the candid, generous judgement of those who know how to weigh alike the difficulties met in the assembling of the material for the work, as well as the differences of opinion concerning the most eligible plan for its arrangements; in the confident belief that to those who appreciate the purpose for which it is offered, an impartial examination will disclose some feature or fact that may be adduced as a sufficient apology for the offer.

THE FAMILY STEM

The names, places, and dates were provided to Donald Porter Karns by his father Samuel Edwin Karns.

Christian Kern (Immigrant Ancestor)

The numerous Karns families in several states of America are descendants of two brothers who's parents Christian Kern and wife helped pioneer this country. Christian Kern and his wife came from the Alsace or Lorrain Valley, Germany in the year 1770. The Christian Kern family settled in the eastern part of Pennsylvania near the city of Easton (a city east of Allentown/Bethelem, Pennsylvania near the Delaware River). It was at this place where the two boys were born. Christian Kern and wife (maiden name unknown) both died about 1785, leaving their sons Johannes Kern (age 6) and Charles Kern (age 5) in the care of an English or Welsh family who raised them to manhood. There is in the Historic Society in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania a record giving a brief history of Charles and Johannes Kern [Record not yet available].

Charles Kern

Son Charles Kern was born in 1780 and was the younger of the two sons of Christian Kern. Charles Kern journeyed west and all traces of him were lost.

Johannes Kern (Ancestor)

Son Johannes Kern was born in 1779 and was the older of the two sons of Christian Kern. Johannes Kern remained in Pennsylvania and at the age of 29 married Elizabeth Stocker in the year 1808. Johannes and Elizabeth (Stocker) Kern had seven children (5 sons and 2 daughters).

unknown daughter Kern

Joseph Kern (Ancestor)

Son Joseph Kern was born August 24, 1809 at 12 o'clock noon; the year following the marriage of his father and mother and when his father Johannes Kern was 30 years old.

There exists a copy of birth and baptism certificate of Joseph Kern written in German language [not yet available]. It reads the following:

THE PARENTS, JOHANNES KERN AND HIS WIFE ELIZABETH, NEE STOCKER WAS BORN TO THEM A SON JOSEPH KERN IN THE YEAR 1809 ON THE 24th DAY OF AUGUST AT 12 O'CLOCK NOON. SAID JOSEPH, BORN AND BAPTIZED IN AMERICA, IN THE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA, NORTH AMPTON COUNTY, PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP. SAID JOSEPH BAPTIZED NOVEMBER 11, 1809 BY THE REVERAND JOHANNES PANG. WITNESS OF BAPTISM WERE HENRY UHLER AND HIS WIFE ELLICE.

It is generally understood that through mispronouncing the name "KERN", the legal authorities in Easton, Pennsylvania recorded the name in 1830 as "KARN". Sometime later the letter "S" was added to make the name "KARNS" as it is used today.

Joseph Karns married Hannah Norrigan in 1835 at the age of 26. Sometime prior to August 9, 1838, the birth of son Alexander Karns; Joseph Karns and family moved from Northampton County, Pennsylvania to Centre County, Pennsylvania. Sometime during the 15 years following the birth of Alexander Karns in Centre County, Pennsylvania; Joseph Karns moved his family to Perry Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania whereby on April 18, 1854 another son George Karns (Ancestor) was born.

Joseph Karns died January 27, 1888 at the age of 78. Hannah (Norrigan) Karns died two days later on January 29, 1888. Both Joseph and Hannah (Norrigan) Karns are buried in Perryville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. Joseph and Hannah (Norrigan) Karns had eleven children (6 sons and 5 daughters).

A Duncan Karns was identified 15 as striking oil on the James Pollock farm located on the heights back from the [Allegheny] river sometime after the May 1869 oil drilling success in Parker's Landing. Other than the knowledge that George Karns who was born April 18, 1854 was 15 years old when Duncan Karns discovered oil on the James Pollock farm, records on the Karns family have not yet provided the identity of Duncan Karns in relationship to the Slaughenhoupt Family. Connections between the oil success of Duncan Karns in 1869, the Karns family, and the founding of the borough of Karns City located between Butler and Parker, Pennsylvania cannot, at this time be associated.
